Craven County, NC 1719 Tax List

One of the early precincts of Bath Co., NC (formed in 1696) was Archdale Precinct, formed in 1705. In 1712, or thereabouts, the name of Archdale was changed to Craven Precinct, and in 1739 North Carolina precincts all became counties. There are very few tax lists preserved for any of the early N.C. precincts and counties in the late 1600's & early 1700's. This 1719 Tax List for Craven Precinct is one of the earliest. The 1720 Tax List for Craven is preserved in the Archives, and was published by Holloman in his Kinston and Lenoir County (co-authored with Talmadge C. Johnson, 1954). However, Johnson and Holloman "modernized" the spellings of the 1720 list (in their words, the list was "slightly revised in the interest of legibility") to where their published version bears but little resemblance to the original. In the 1720 List, just the total number of tithables was given for each entry. In this 1719 Tax List, not only are the number of tithables given for each taxable, but also the number of acres of land.
