Joseph Burney Tingle enlisted in 40th Regiment, North Carolina Troops (3rd Reg NC. Artillery, also called Gatlin Artillery) at age 49 on 28 Sep 1861 for the duration of the war. He served in Company D under Captain James S. Lane. Joseph Burney Tingle died in a hospital at Ft Fisher of disease on 17-18 Jul 1862. He died 4 months after his youngest child, Joseph Marr Tingle (my ancestor), was born. He left a widow, Harriet Ellen Warren Tingle, three daughters, Fannie, Mary J. and Martha E., and two sons, Albert and Joseph Marr. Joseph Burney Tingle married first Julia Ann Daw in Craven Co. on 13 Dec 1836. He married second Harriet Ellen Warren in Beaufort Co. on 25 Dec 1853. Harriett lived in Beaufort Co. with her children after Joseph's death until her death on 28 Dec 1882. Seven other Tingles from Craven Co. also enlisted in the Confederate Artillery: Andrew J. Tingle, James Tingle, Gideon Tingle, John D. Tingle, Josiah Tingle, Levi W. Tingle and John W. Tingle.
