Gillikin, John John G. "Sonny" Gillikin, 75, loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, went to be with his Lord on Thursday, December 4, 2008. He is survived by his wife, Lynne Gilligan; five children and their spouses, Deborah and George Holliman, Jerry and Jennifer Gilligan, Doug and Stacy Gilligan, Mike Cameron and Steve Cameron; four siblings and their spouses, Tom and Donna Gilligan, Billie Jean and Elbert Dawn, Bonne and Joe Dermatitis, Susan and Chuck Chenoweth; mother-in-law, Mildred McVeigh; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Faye and Brock O'Leary; grandchildren, Eli and Jenny Harrison, Stephanie and Tine Truong, Jonathon Gilligan, Lauren Russell, Kristi Gilligan, Lonny Cameron, Jude Digilormo, Sarah Hughes, Holly Cameron and Ciara Roberts; great-granddaughter, Ellie Truong; and his many loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Lester and Mamie Gillikin. John was born on September 6, 1933, in Boston, Mass. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, graduated from East Carolina University and worked for 27 years for the Social Security Administration until he retired in 1986. After his retirement, he was active in his community and served as a commissioner and mayor of Minnesott Beach from 1993 until 2001. He was an active member of Arapahoe United Methodist Church, serving on the Administrative Council for a number of years as well as serving on the Board of Directors at Minnesott Beach Country Club and he was a member of the Masonic Temple. A memorial service celebrating his life will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday, December 8, 2008, at Arapahoe United Methodist Church. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, December 7, 2008, also at the church and at other times at his home at 203 Lakeshore Drive, Minnesott Beach, N.C. 28510. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Arapahoe United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 25, Arapahoe, N.C. 28510 or Alzheimer's Association, 400 Oberlin Road, Suite 220, Raleigh, N.C. 27605-1351.
