Published in the Sun Journal from 3/31/2009 - 4/3/2009 Evans Jr. (USN Ret.), CDR Herman CDR Herman "Brink" Evans Jr., U.S. Navy Retired, age 92, of Virginia Beach, Va., died Tuesday evening, April 7, 2009, at Virginia Beach Healthcare and Rehab. Son of the late Herman Evans and Edna M. Davis Evans, Brink was born in Hopkinton, Mass., on December 28, 1916. Raised in Harrisville, R.I., Brink studied at Rhode Island State College and graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1941 with a degree in Business Administration. Brink was an avid pilot whose flying career, Navy and civilian, spanned more than 50 years. He was also a competitive, gracious athlete who enjoyed ocean sailing, mountain skiing and tennis his entire life. Golf, however, was his daily passion. He passed on his enthusiasm for the sport to his children and everyone who ever knew him. Taught by Ben Hogan personally, Brink preferred to walk the course and was shooting well under his age in recent years. Not surprisingly, he was invited as a young man to play golf in the Open de France representing the U.S. Navy. The Navy fueled Brink's second passion in life, flying. Brink passed his Navy and Air Force flight exams as a sophomore and later attended solo flight school in Atlanta, Ga., becoming a Naval Aviator. Commissioned an Ensign in early 1942, Brink joined Air Group 26 aboard the carrier USS Sangamon. His tour of duty included two years as a fighter pilot in North Africa and the Pacific Islands. Among other honors, CDR Evans was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and a Presidential Citation. After the war, he graduated from the U.S. Naval Test Pilot's Training School and earned a graduate degree from UCLA in aeronautical engineering. His service included testing the introduction of jets onto U.S. Navy carriers. He retired as a Commander in the U.S. Navy and embarked on a career in sales with Columbia Yachts, Blue Circle Atlantic and Newmont Mining. Brink's fellow ensign in flight school, Joseph P. Kennedy Jr., introduced Brink to Helen Ramona Cuppia, daughter of Jerome and Helen Raymond Cuppia of Montclair, N.J., and they were wed in 1942. Together, they raised 5 children, and were one of the first residents of Birdneck Point in Virginia Beach, Va. After Ramona's passing in 1978, Brink married Bonnie Camp and resided in New Bern, N.C. A few months after Bonnie's passing in 1992, he married Jane Saunders LeCompte and returned to Virginia Beach. A brother, Paul Haring Evans, a flight surgeon in Hollywood, Calif., preceded Brink in death. Published in the Sun Journal from 4/18/2009 - 4/21/2009 Evans Jr. His service included testing the intro-duction of jets onto U.S. He is survived by his wife, Jane LeCompte Evans; five children, Brink Cuppia Evans and wife, Sylvia, of North Bend, Wash., Barry Davis Evans and wife, Linda, of New Bern, N.C., Helen Evans Lewis and husband, Jerry, of Chattanooga, Tenn., Joy Raymond Evans of Reno, Nev., and Edward Pierce Evans and partner, David Roth, of Atlanta, Ga.; two stepchildren, Kirkwood Adams LeCompte and Jane LeCompte Yates; also seven grandchildren, Jay Evans, Catherine Evans, Ben Evans, Kelly Ann Evans, Barry Paul Evans, Shawn Richard Helton, and Dawn Helton Vrhovac; and five great-grandchildren. Published in the Sun Journal from 4/15/2009 - 4/18/2009 Hoose, Harriett Webb The family of Harriett Webb Hoose, a New Bern resident since 1990, was saddened by her peaceful passing on April 10, 2009. Miss Harriett, as she was fondly referred to, was 86 years young. She enjoyed a remarkable and full life. Born in West Chester, Pa., Harriett grew up at Caswallen, the Webb family estate, with her two younger sisters. She attendedthe Rhode Island School of Design until World War II broke out and, like many young women, went to work in the shipyards installing radar systems. There she met and married her handsome sailor, Frank Hoose, whose expertise in radio communications led to a life of adventure and travel through his career with the Central Intelligence Agency. Harriett learned Greek, Arabic and German. She taught piano and tutored special needs students in math and reading. After seeing the world and living in Cyprus, Germany, and Saipan, Frank and Harriett eventually settled in New Bern and loved taking cruises to the Caribbean. Harriett was active in the Quilters Guild, the Miniature Club, the Doll Club, Friends of the Library and the Farmers Market. Her beloved husband, Frank, passed away in 2001, and Harriett downsized to an apartment at McCarthy Court last year. The families of daughter, Linda Hastings (New Bern resident and local artist); son, Frank Hoose Jr. of Fairfax, Va., and son, Thomas Hoose of Amherst, N.H., will gather in a few months for a private Celebration of Life. They will create a memorial garden for Harriett on the family property she loved at 1309 Green Springs Road in New Bern. Friends are welcome to leave plants in her honor as we wish Miss Harriett a final Bon Voyage. Cotten Funeral Home served the Hoose family.
