Duffy Jr., Charles

Charles Duffy Jr., 73, of New Bern died Sunday, July 27, 2008, of complications
from a fall.
Born in 1935, he was the son of the late Dr. and Mrs. Charles Duffy of New Bern.
He is survived by his brother, Daniel Breck Duffy of Virginia Beach, Virginia, and
his sister, Mathilde Duffy of Watertown, Massachusetts.
harles was a master gardener, historian, avid fisherman, book collector, lover of
nature, intrepid outdoorsman, collector of New Bern memorabilia, and believer in
all things possible. He was an inspiration to all and a man of extreme integrity
and work ethic. He liked to quote historian S.A. Ashe by saying, "Everyone owes
something to the community of which he is a member." Certainly, he more than
lived up to that ideal, for no one loved New Bern more than Charles.
In his earlier life, Charles devoted himself to the Boy Scouts, taught canoeing, and
took Scouts on national survival trips. He continued to love the outdoors, teaching
young and old about astronomy, seashells, plants, birds, etc.
At Washington and Lee University he excelled in track and swimming. In high
school, he played defensive halfback on the varsity football squad.
In 1969, he started Berne Book Service to research rare books, repair and bind
books, and research history. He had also worked at the local public library with the
bookmobile. No one loved to read more than Charles, whether it was large volumes of
history, the classics, stories of exploration, or philosophy. He wrote children's books
for his family and compiled an anthology of local poetry.
Charles created his own beautiful garden and made sure other people's gardens and
yards were kept in top shape.
His pet saying for anyone he greatly admired was, "That person is not any kind of
no-account man." How could anyone describe Charles any better?
A memorial service will be held at Christ Episcopal Church on Thursday, August 7, at
4 p.m. with the Rev. Peter Stube officiating. A reception immediately follows in the
Ministry Center at 311 Middle Street.
Private interment at Cedar Grove Cemetery will be held another day for the family.

Shivar, Larry Dale

Larry Dale Shivar, 55, formerly of New Bern, passed away peacefully Sunday, August 17, 2008,
in the comfort of his home surrounded by his loving family.
This life traveled many paths. An undying love of Allison and Derrick, enjoyment at the sound of
Jimi Hendricks. The sight of a lone egret at the water's edge brought pure delight. A glance of the
ocean, a pelican skimming the water, a shiny '69 Camaro or an old friend provided sincere pleasure.
A cigarette in one hand and a Diet Pepsi in the other, the anticipation of consuming oysters and
the feel of the sand would inspire genuine comfort. An enthusiastic devotion of sports was the norm,
even a foxtrot or two. Attending a NASCAR event was priceless.
I will miss you, my knight. My heart will always embrace our days together. Convey to me the
wonders of Heaven.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be sent to The Dale Jr. Foundation, PO Box 330, Mooresville,
N.C. 28115. The family will receive friends at Larry's home from 2:00-5 p.m. Tuesday, August 19, 2008.

Kunkel, Michael Lee

Michael Lee Kunkel, 56, beloved son of Joan and Earl Kunkel of Fairfield Harbour, passed
away late Sunday, Aug. 10, 2008 at his parents' home, where he has resided since he was
diagnosed with terminal metastic cancer in January 2002.
Michael's early life was full of joy and happiness and a bit of being a little bit famous. He was
well-known and a much sought-after athlete, especially in baseball. He was not only a
commanding and fearless catcher, but he was truly blessed with ambidexterity. His 6-foot-4
frame and strength brought people to their feet when he came to bat - either left or right
handedly - as the team's cleanup batter. He was about to get his first offer when, in 1968, Mike
and his two older brothers all quit school and enlisted to serve in the Vietnam War.
His older brother, Paul, was in the Marine Corps and assigned to serve in Vietnam. His oldest
brother, Ron, was in the Army and assigned to serve as a tank commander at Fort Knox.
Michael was in the Army and sent to Germany to serve with the Corps of Engineers there.
It was there Michael literally fell in love with dirt, rocks, sides of steep hills, heavy earth-moving
equipment and, most of all, tower cranes. He said once he felt he had been sent to heaven.
Naturally, after his discharge, such became his trade - a supervisor laughingly told Mike's dad
one day: "Take any machine they make, put Mike on it, and he can remove the print from a
newspaper."
Michael is survived by the "best part of my life," two daughters, Krysta Marie Jones, her Nick and
their toddler daughter, Payton, the image of her grandfather, who live in Charlotte Hall, Md.; his
youngest daughter, Alyssa Michele, and her husband, Raymond Williams, who live in Crofton, Md.
with their two little girls, Julianna and Tatalia.
Michael was preceded in death by his older brother, Paul, who was lost at sea sailing his 38-foot
endeavor "The Leslie" somewhere off the coast of Florida. No trace of the boat or its captain has ever been
 found.
Mike is survived by a very large and close-knit family. Therefore, 17 of his "buddy cousins" will have to
remain nameless here. But he is survived by two brothers and two sisters and their families, R.E. Kunkel
III, his Claire and their daughter, Olivia, who live in Weston, Fla.; his brother, John Adam, his Kathy and
their two daughters, Alexandra and Jessica, who the family calls "the walking brain." Alexandra attends
her father's alma mater, Elon College. She finished her freshman year with a 3.5 GPA and was on the
dean's list. John's family lives in Annapolis, Md.
Mike is also survived by his brother Paul's family, Eileen Thomas and their daughter, Leslie Marie. They
live in North Palm Beach, Fla.
Michael's two sisters, both the younger of four brothers, are Laura Mapleton Ford, her mate Glenn S.
Ford, their three children Adam, Sarah and Jacob. They live in Pittsburgh, Pa., where their business,
Allegheny Textile Inc., is based. Adam recently graduated from Penn State, earned his Phi Beta Kappa
and is pursuing his master's in economics there.
The youngest sister of all is Claudia Anne Hollis, her husband, Rex (R.E. Hollis Jr.) and their two
daughters, Kate and Rachel Elizabeth (R.E. Hollis III). Kate will attend Elon College this fall. She
earned her Phi Beta Kappa this past year and is a skilled soccer player. Rachel seems to have
inherited her uncle Mike's baseball talent.
Family to Mike included many people because he truly loved people. But part of the immediate family is
Carolyn Wynne, Sylvia Wynne and Rory - all of whom gave him undying support, encouragement and
family love. They played a large part in prolonging his life.
He is survived by his "second mother, Aunt Mimi," Marie Mapleton, who cared for him deeply all his life;
his aunt Pat, Patricia McIntosh, who wrote him a letter every week for six years; and his caring and
concerned "uncle Bob," Dr. F.A. Mapleton, all of whom live in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; his uncle Ed Kunkel
of Knoxville, Tenn.; and last, but not least, his real buddy in life, Col. Russell Kunkel and his Brenda,
who live in Tampa, Fla.
A memorial service was held Saturday, Aug. 16, 2008 in Silver Spring, Md. Interment will be held at a
later date at the Kunkel and Mapleton grave sites at Woodlawn Cemetery in Miami, Fla.
Wilmington Burial and Cremation Services of Wilmington took care of Michael's remains, where he was
given his veterans' American flag.
The extended Kunkel and Mapleton family want to take this opportunity to thank Dr. Philip Bounous,
Betty and their staff for all they did for both Michael and his family; Dr. Patrick Walsh and his staff, who
gave Michael encouragement, care and great patience; Dr. Cho, who took his time and care to give
Michael great encouragement; Mary of Community Hospice; and Rosemary and the staff at Liberty
Hospice, who attended to Michael so professionally.
Mike asked that all those who want to send a remembrance of any kind send a small contribution to
Merci Clinic, Tatum Drive, New Bern, NC 28560 or do something for the homeless on our streets.
Mike wants to tell all cancer patients he was given six to eight months to live seven years ago. He
wants to tell you to go on actively living life, not cancer. Keep your life busy, and full and each morning
and each night ask St. Jude to help you live one more day. God bless you all.

Vatz, Isabelle Freid

Isabelle Freid Vatz of Charlotte, formerly of Weldon, New Bern and Raleigh, passed away Thursday,
June 19, 2008. She was born on June 28, 1916 in Weldon and was nearly 92 years old.
Mrs. Vatz was the daughter of Russian immigrants who instilled their appreciation of U.S. freedom.
She attended Meredith College in Raleigh and Women's College (now UNCG) in Greensboro. She
worked during World War II as a FBI fingerprint analyst and married Harry Louis Vatz in 1947, who
was the love of her life and with whom she spent 42 wonderful years. The two were partners in their
store, The Fashion Center, a ladies clothing store, in downtown New Bern, for nearly 40 years. Their
success was partially due to the fact that they strongly believed the "customer was always right."
She was very committed to her community and various fund-raising and civic efforts.
Mrs. Vatz was very involved in Temple B'Nai Sholem in New Bern, where she served in numerous
leadership and teaching positions and Temple Emanu-El in Weldon. She was also elected to many
leadership roles in Hadassah, a womens' Zionist organization, and Eastern Star. Mrs. Vatz was also
active in the USO and the Chrysanthemum Festival at Tryon Palace in New Bern.
She will be remembered for many qualities and deeds. Some of these include her loving devotion and
dedication to her family and her faith in God and Jewish causes. Isabelle was also known for her
generosity and altruism, her gregarious manner and her elegant tastes in apparel. She had a marvelous
sense of humor, a quick wit and had a knack for telling stories and giving advice to anyone who would
listen. She was certainly blessed with a gift of "gab." Isabelle was quite adventurous and went on her
first whitewater rafting trip out west when she was in her early 80s and also traveled extensively around
the world with her husband and lifelong friends.
She was always interested in learning and improving herself and enjoyed the arts. Another one of her
favorite past times was reading, and she was very informed about current events. After growing up in
the retail business and owning a store for most of her life, she thoroughly enjoyed many shopping
adventures every place she visited. She spent many long hours maintaining her yard on Tryon Road.
Isabelle had very traditional values but, on the other hand, was a woman ahead of her times. She was
very young at heart and believed that hard work, perseverance and kindness towards others was the
key to personal success. May her memory be a blessing to all who knew her.
