Obituary of Bernard John Pickens ~ 2008

Pickens, Bernard John Bernard John Pickens, 70, of 1604 Hazel Avenue died Wednesday, October 29th at Craven Regional Medical Center. He was a native of Winston-Salem and graduate of Winston Salem State Teachers College, Class of 1961 and a Veteran of the U. S. Army. He resided in New Bern and was employed by the New Bern-Craven County School System having taught at West St. School, Central School, H. J. McDonald and retired from Grover C. Fields Middle School in 1993. He was an active member and Trustee of Ebenezer Presbyterian Church. His civic memberships was as a member of the Nu Alpha Chapter Omega Psi Phi Faternity, Inc and the NAACP . Funeral will be 11:00am Monday at Ebenezer Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Robert Johnson officiating. Burial will be in New Bern Memorial Cemetery. He is survived by his daughters, Sonia Pickens of the home; Kristi P. Hall of Kernesville, NC and Kathy Dillard of Winston, Salem, NC; one brother, Ronald Pickens of Kernesville, NC; four grandchildren and one great grandchild. The Nu Alpha Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Faternity, Inc. will conduct ritualistic services 5:00 PM Sunday, November 2nd at Oscar's Mortuary followed by visitation of friends. Viewing at Oscar's Mortuary Sunday beginning at 1:00 PM and at the church Monday an hour prior to the service.
