Hardy Jr., Charlie 


Charlie Hardy Jr., 82, of 519 Larkspur Road, died Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2008, at 
Kitty Askins Hospice Center. 
A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday Nov. 29 in Star Zion AME Zion Church 
of Hookerton with the Rev. Blackmon officiating. Burial will take place in Shady 
Grove Cemetery of Snow Hill. 
Survivors include children Jesse Hardy, Linda Ormond, Janice Jones, Dazzerine 
Dixon, Bonita Ellis, Kimberly Williams, Lorenzo Hardy, Antonio Hardy, Curtis 
Mitchell, Rodney Hardy, Wanda Hardy and Karen Hardy-Matthews; sister Estella 
Dunn; brother Jesse Gray Arnold,Hardy; 32 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Visitation took place Friday Nov. 28 at the church. Arrangements by Fonville &

Arnold, Eliza Mitchell
Mrs. Arnold died Sunday, November 30 at the Little Flower Assisted Living in Mint 
Hill, N.C. She is the daughter of the late Frederick Graham Mitchell and Carrie 
Whitehurst Mitchell. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Earl 
Arnold; sister, Carolyn Mitchell Nelson; and brother, Frederick Graham Mitchell, Jr.
Mrs. Arnold was born March 29, 1919 and was a life long member of Centenary 
Methodist Church in New Bern, an excellent cook and homemaker, and for some 
years worked as book keeper for New Bern Building Supply Co. She enjoyed being 
with friends and family and hearing and telling stories of life in New Bern.
She is survived by her cousin, Sam L. Whitehurst and wife Carolyn; nieces Carolyn 
Nelson Faulkner, Cindy Arnold, and Lana Lartigue and nephew, Stan Arnold; 
great-niece Joanna Faulkner Hall and great-nephew William Faulkner, Jr.; and 
longtime dear friend Alberta Dickinson Cobb.
Interment will be Wednesday, December 3, 11 AM at the New Bern National
Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM in the chapel at Centenary 
United Methodist Church with a reception following in the Fellowship Hall.

Mattie Hicks - November 28, 2008
Mattie Beatrice Hicks, 94, of the James City Community, entered into eternal rest on 
Friday, November 28, 2008 at the Britthaven of New Bern Nursing Facility.
She was a lifetime member of Pilgrim Chapel Missionary Baptist Church where she 
served as church Secretary for over 70 years, Sunday School teacher and was an active 
member until 2003. She was educated in the James City Elementary School and a 
graduate of West Street High School in New Bern. She was previously employed as a 
cook at the original James City Elementary School.
She was preceded in death by: her PARENTS, James Miles Hicks and Emma Brooks 
Hicks.
Mattie will be forever cherished by: 1 SISTER, Emma Hicks Henderson of the James 
City Community; 3 NEPHEWS, Bennie E. Hicks (Sadie), Terrence Hicks (Eunice) of 
New Bern and Timothy Henderson (Vickie); 4 NIECES, Iris Stevens, Loretta Bryant, 
Cynthia Hicks and Velma Henderson; a host of OTHER RELATIVES, church members 
and friends, including her longtime employer & beloved friend, Dora Taylor and Family.
Memorial Service will be held on Friday, December 05, 2008 at 10:00 AM in the Pilgrim 
Chapel Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Joseph Winbush, Officiating. Interment 
will immediately follow the service in the Brooks Family Cemetery.

Shirk, David Glenn 

David Glenn Shirk of Oriental passed away on Friday, November 28, 2008, at Craven 
Regional Medical Center. Dave was born December 20, 1952, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. 
He lived in Medina, Ohio, with his family most of his pre-college years. He graduated
 from Purdue University with a master's degree in electrical engineering. While in 
college, he established his computer software company, Technical Systems 
Consultants, Inc. (TSC), located in West Lafayette, Ind., and relocated the business 
to Research Triangle Park in 1980. He married Marsha Helmke and moved to Oriental 
in 1989 and retired from his business. 
Dave loved the water and this area of the coast. He was a sailor and traveled the Neuse 
River and Intracoastal Water Way often on his sailboat, Misbehavin. 
He and Marsha opened and operated M&M's Restaurant in Oriental from 1994 to 2005, 
known as a favorite eating spot for locals and sailors traveling the Intracoastal Water Way. 
In 2006, he established a recording studio and concert promotions business called 
Pamlico Sounds, which brought in several famous artists to perform in the Old 
Theater in Oriental, including George Winston, Leon Redbone, Roger Mcquin from the 
Bryds, Livingstone Taylor and Loudon Wainwright III. 
He was an avid amateur radio operator since the age of 12, K14KQ, and recently upgraded 
his license to the highest level, Extra and changed his call sign to AA4OK. 
He was preceded in death by his father, Guy Shirk. He is survived by his wife, Marsha; 
stepdaughters, Andrea Bruce of Washington, D.C., and Rebecca Rice and husband, 
Timmy; grandchildren, Brittany and Tobey Rice of Alliance; his mother, Alva Shirk of 
Medina, Ohio; and brother, Guy Shirk Jr. of Medina, Ohio. 
A memorial service is planned for 2 p.m. Saturday, December 6, at Bryant Funeral Home 
Chapel, Alliance, with the Rev. Stan Brown officiating. 
The family will receive friends at the home following the service, 303 Main Street, Oriental, 
N.C. 28571.

Monroe, Morris David 


Morris David Monroe, 72, of 128 Dare Drive, New Bern, died Sunday, Nov. 30, 2008, at 
Craven Regional Medical Center. 
He retired from the U.S. Marine Corps as a sergeant major after 30 years and worked
 for Charlie Bayer Construction Company. 
He is survived by two sons, Christopher Monroe of Jacksonville, Fla., and Thomas 
Monroe of the home; two daughters, Kathleen Zilles of the home and Teresa 
Schwemmer of New Jersey; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Arnold, Eliza Mitchell 

Mrs. Arnold died Sunday, November 30, at the Little Flower Assisted Living in Mint Hill,

CHOCOWINITY - Ronald Earl "Bolt" Hardy, 63, of 1671 N.C. 102 Hwy. West died Sunday 
Nov. 30, 2008, at Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville.

He was the owner and operator of Hardy's Country Mart in Chocowinity and Dixon's Service 
Station in Vanceboro. He was a member of Pollard Swamp Hunting Club and Gorham Swamp
 Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church. 
He is survived by his wife, Brenda, of the home; one son, Kenneth Earl Hardy of Chocowinity; 
one daughter, Angela Hardy Manning of Chocowinity; one brother, Marvin Ray Hardy of 
Washington; one sister, Janice Hardy Hodges of Washington; and three grandchildren.

Harrison, Benjamin Hudson 


CANDLER - Benjamin Hudson Harrison, 40, died Friday, Nov. 28, 2008, at Memorial 
Campus of Mission Hospitals. 
He was a native of San Diego, Calif., and grew up in New Bern. He had lived in Buncombe 
County the past 10 years. He was a security officer at Mission Hospitals. He was a 
third-degree black belt and served as an instructor of tae kwon do at the ATA Black Belt 
Academy. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran who served in the Gulf War. 
He is survived by his wife, Teresa Orozco-Harrison of the home; his father, William 
McKinley Harrison of New Bern; his stepmother, Mildred Harrison of New Bern; five children, 
Aaron Orozco of Roanoke, Va., and Brittany Harrison, Zachary Harrison, Corey Harrison 
and Victoria Orozco, all of Candler; one granddaughter; three sisters, Margie Ellis of 
Indian Beach, Barbara Jackson of Havelock and Sherri Brander of Melbourne, Fla.; one 
brother, Billy Harrison of California; and four stepbrothers, Brent, Heath and Jeff Fulcher, 
all of New Bern, and Gregory Fulcher of Suffolk, Va.

CHOCOWINITY - Dumay Johnson Jr., 58, of 370 Tuten Road, Blounts Creek, died Tuesday,

He attended the Beaufort County schools and worked in brick masonry. He was a member 
of St. Anna Missionary Baptist Church.

He retired from the U.S. Air Force, having served during World War II and Vietnam.

Lodge #568, Sudan Temple, Scottish Rite and York Rite, and was a life member of 
New Bern Civic Theater.

Gillikin, Charles LeRoy 

Charles LeRoy Gillikin died on December 1, 2008, in Kitty Askins Hospice Home, 
Goldsboro, after an extended illness with Parkinson's. He was diagnosed with the disease 
in 1992 and spent several years in nursing homes. 
He was born in Morehead City on October 19, 1929, to Dewey and Bessie Potter Gillikin. 
He grew up in Bridgeton and attended school there. 
He joined the U.S. Navy at the close of WWII, and served his country in Japan, the Pacific,
 and in the Korean War. He served with the U.S. Coast Guard during the First Gulf War, and 
retired from that branch of service. He retired from civil service, Cherry Point. 
He was a member of New Forest Presbyterian Church, where he was a choir member 
forty-five years. 
He is preceded in death by a son, William Larry Price. 
Surviving are his wife of fifty-five years, Emily; sons, Charles Gillikin Jr. of New Bern and Bruce 
Gillikin of Wilmington; daughters, Nancy G. Thompson of Bonita Springs, Florida, and Frances 
P. Gray of Elkin; daughter-in-law, Mariya Price; grandsons, Danny Gillikin, John Gillikin, Jason 
Gillikin, Stuart Thompson and Kane Price; granddaughters, Helena Price, Karen Thompson, 
Katy Shook and Ann Douglas; and sister, Wilma Hurt of Northfield, N.J. 
His wishes were to have the U. S. Coast Guard commit his ashes at sea. Those wanting to

Norman, Vernon Elwood 

Vernon Elwood Norman, 82, of Ernul died Tuesday, December 2, at Craven Regional Medical 
Center. 
Mr. Norman was a 21-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force and a retired foreman with the 
Department of Transportation. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. 
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Delores T. Norman of Ernul; his son, Mark Norman of New 
Bern; two daughters, Julie Wright and Vicki Upton, both of New Bern; four brothers, Noah Norman 
of Greenville, Robert Norman of Florida, Larry Norman and Milan Norman, both of Ernul; eight

GODWIN - Martha Sue Warren Page, 78, of 6567 Autry Mill Road died Wednesday, Nov. 26, 
2008, at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville. 
She was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church. She was a 1948 graduate of 
Mingo High School and attended Worth College in Fayetteville.

She is survived by her sons, Robert "Bobby" Page of Fayetteville and Thomas Paul Page of

Schwolow, Raymond Kenneth 

Raymond Kenneth Schwolow, 92, passed over on Nov 30 at his home in River Bend after 
a courageous fight against cancer. He was born in Magnolia N.J., to William and Edna 
Way Schwolow. He lived many years in Haddonfield N.J., and moved to New Bern when 
he retired from Catalytic Construction Company in 1980. He was an active member of 
Garber United Methodist Church and enjoyed woodworking, making many items for family, 
friends, and his church. 
Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Doris; children, Ed (Val) Schwolow of Franklin, Va., 
Pat (Charles) Shaw of Fogelsville, Penn., and Janet Breese of Marietta, Ga.; grandchildren, 
Karl Schwolow, Jack Schwolow, Kelly Bruno, Beverly Shaw, Jeffrey Shaw, Jessica Breese, 
and Sean Breese; and great-grandchildren, Tyler Bruno and Alyssa Valletta. He was 
predeceased by his brother, Donald, sister, Evelyn, and grandson, Jonathan Breese.

He is survived by his wife, Jacquelyn Cohan Mathews; two sons, Timothy Armor Mathews 
and Mackenzie Anderson Mathews; his parents, Howard B. Mathews Jr. and his wife, Helen, 
of New Bern; a brother, Clayton Mathews and wife, Anne, of Gainesville, Fla.; a sister, 
Susan Oliver and husband, William, of Hastings, Neb.; maternal grandmother, Alice Coggin 
of Lincolnton; mother-in-law, Elizabeth Cohan of Charlotte; and a brother-in-law, Richard 
Cohan and wife, Emily, of Welford, S.C. 
Andy was born September 25, 1967, in New Bern. He was the art director with Hero Games 
and a faithful and devoted member of Believers Fellowship, where he was a member of the 
worship team. 
A celebration of Andy's life will be conducted at 4 p.m. Friday, December 5, 2008, at Believers 
Fellowship by John Bullock with a reception to follow.

Ricky Lee Northern, 50, of Charlotte died Saturday, Nov. 29, 2008, at Mercy Hospital in 
Charlotte. 
He was a native of Pamlico County and attended Pamlico County High School. He was 
also a member of T.L.C. Ministries in Rock Hill, S.C.

Briley Sr., James C. 

James C. Briley, Sr., 84, of New Bern passed away on December 4, 2008. Mr. Briley 
was a longtime and charter member of Trinity United Methodist Church, where he 
served in many roles, the most cherished as a devoted choir member. He also served 
his country during World War II in the U.S. Army and was a career employee of the 
N.C. Department of Revenue. Perhaps his greatest contribution was to his family as a 
loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather.

HARKERS ISLAND - Paul D. Barnes, 47, formerly of St. Albans, W.Va., died Dec. 2, 
2008, after a sudden illness.

He was the owner of Black Dog Fishing Charter. He served in the West Virginia National

Claretta Franks Hull, 69, 4018 Copperfield Dr. died Wednesday, December 3rd at 
Craven Regional Medical Center.
She was an X-Ray Technician Assistant retiree of Craven County Hospital and an 
employee of Life Inc. She was a faithful member of West St. Christian Church.

RIVER BEND- Teofil C. "Chris" Jakows, 84 of River Bend, died December 4, 2008, at 
Craven Regional Medical Center. 
Chris was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, a longtime volunteer at the soup 
kitchen, River Bend Community Watch and S.O.L.O. (Survivors of Loved Ones). He 
loved baseball and model trains. 
He was preceded in death by his wife, Victoria L. Jakows; his sister Frances; and 
brothers Joseph, William, Stanley and Raymond. He is survived by two sisters, Emilie 
Fitzgerald of Harleysville, Pa., and Elizabeth Bowe of Wayne, Pa., and many nieces

Leroy Marrion Jones, 89, of 1128 G Street, New Bern, died Monday, Dec. 8, 
2008, at his residence. 
He was a native of Oriental, He lived in New Bern for more than 60 years after 
his discharge from the United States Army. He retired from NADEP at Cherry 
Point as a plumber in 1988. His membership at Rue Chapel AME Church 
included serving as a former trustee and choir member and his community 
affilation included membership in The Men's Fellowship Chorus. 
The funeral will be held at noon, Saturday, Dec. 13, 2008, at Rue Chapel AME 
Church with the Rev. L. K. Staten officiating. Burial will be in New Bern Memorial 
Cemetery with military honors.

Henderson Jr., William Henry 

William Henry Henderson, Jr., 93, of Signal Mountain, Tenn., passed away on 
Tuesday, December 9, 2008. 
Mr. Henderson was born in Jacksonville to William and Laura Henderson Sr. He 
was a member of Oak Grove Methodist Church in Atlanta, Ga., a WWII Air Force 
veteran serving in the Pacific Theater, and retired after 39 years from Sears as the 
Southeast territorial credit manager. 
He was preceded in death by his wife, Sara "Tootsie" Mitchell Henderson, and
 sisters, Margaret McJordan and Sara Loeffler. 
Surviving are his sons, Lt. Col. (retired) C. D. Henderson and his wife, Dee, of 
Austin, Texas, and William H. "Bill" Henderson and his wife, Corinne, of

Daugherty, Margaret Teachey 


Margaret Teachey Daugherty, 86, of LaGrange went to be with her Lord on 
Wednesday, December 10, 2008. She was affectionately known to her children 
and grandchildren as "Mema." Mrs. Daugherty lived in Lenoir County for most of 
her life, even though she was born in Duplin County. She was the greatest Mom 
and Grandma in the world. She worked at Albain Shirt Company for 18 years b
efore retiring; was an avid gardener; a homemaker, and a joy to be around. She 
loved listening to gospel music. 
Mrs. Daugherty is survived by her husband of 65 happy years, Harry Daugherty; 
seven children, Evelyn and Ralph Ginn of Goldsboro, Larry and Yvonne Daugherty
 and Linda Vance, all of LaGrange, Elaine and Arthur Pridgen of Snow Hill, 
Louise and James Tyndall, Debbie and Greg Scheller, and Harry (Junior) and

Dorothy Lee Everette Singleton, 66, of 2504 North Hills Drive, New Bern, died 
Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2008 at Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville. 
She was a native of Conway, N.C., and relocated to New Bern in the early 1990s. 
She was a cosmetologist at Designing Image. Her membership at Ephesus 
Seventh-day Ad-ventist Church included serving as an usher, youth choir director 
and Sabbath School assistant. 
Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Ephesus Seventh-day Adventist 
Church, with the Rev. Eugene Mason officiating. The interment will be in the 
Singleton Family Cemetery, Vanceboro. 
She is survived by her husband, James L. Singleton of the home; one daughter, 
Diana Singleton of Garner.; one son, Gregory Singleton of Rocky Mount; five 
sisters, Ozella Dickens and Jean Benthall of Conway, Mollie Vaughn of Woodland, 
Louise Parker and Linda Williams of Murfreesboro; six brothers, Howard Everette 
Jr. of Conway, Arthur Everette, Charles Everette, Charlie Everette of Murfreesboro, 
James Melvin Everette of Woodland and Irvin Everette of Rocky Mount; and three 
grandchildren. 
The family will receive friends at the residence. Viewing will be at Oscar's Mortuary 
from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sunday, and at the 
church Monday an hour prior to the service.

Torrence, Harry Lee 

Major Harry Lee Torrence, U.S. Army (Ret), 71, of Goose Creek, S.C., died Tuesday, 
December 9, 2008, in a hospital in Charleston, S.C. 
Born July 24, 1937 in New Bern, he was a son of Samuel Mason and Espie Harriett 
Lee Torrence. Mr. Torrence grew up in New Bern and attended New Bern High School, 
where he met his future wife of 50 years, Terry Ann Munford. He earned an AA degree 
from Mars Hill College in 1957 and received his B.S. degree from East Carolina University. 
Harry enlisted in the U.S. Army in September 1958, and his early career involved 
maintenance and assembly of atomic weapons. He graduated from Officer Candidate 
Training School and the U.S. Artillery and Missile School in Fort Sill, Okla., and was 
commissioned as an officer in July 1964. He served in Vietnam in 1968-69 and was 
cited for outstanding achievement and awarded the Army Commendation Medal for his 
actions during the period of January to August 1968 while serving with Company D, 709 
Maintenance Battalion, 9th Infantry division. He also received the Bronze Star Medal for 
outstanding meritorious service in connection with military operations against a hostile force. 
Mr. Torrence graduated from the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College at Fort 
Leavenworth, Kansas, and the John E. Anderson Graduate School of Management at 
UCLA. From 1974 to 1976, he was the exchange officer with the British Army serving as 
the head of the Department of Basic Electronics at the Royal School of Electrical and 
Mechanical Engineering, Arborfield, England. As the officer in charge, he was responsible 
for the school cricket team, as well as directing the fund-raising effort for the Army 
Mountaineering Association's attempt to climb Mt. Everest. For the next three years, he 
was stationed at Redstone Arsenal, Ala. where he worked on the SAM-D missile project. 
When he retired from the military in 1979, he went to Hughes Aircraft in El Segundo, Calif. 
and became a program manager on the TOW 2 missile subsystem project. In 1985, he 
moved to Santa Barbara Research (a subsidiary of Hughes Aircraft located in Santa 
Barbara, Calif.), where he became a programs manager over infrared detector development. 
Harry was an avid golfer his entire life and moved to Charleston in 2006 to be close to his 
children and grandchildren. He was a member of Crowfield Golf and County Club, Goose 
Creek and also the Harbour Club in Charleston. 
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Terry Ann Munford Torrencc of Goose Creek, SC; 
two sons, Lee Torrence and his wife, the Reverend Margaret Torrence, of Swannanoa,
 N.C., and Jeff Torrence of James Island, S.C.; grandchildren; Nate and Hanna Torrence 
and Joshua Piers Torrence; and brother, Sam Torrence and his wife, Juleann, of Dotham, 
Ala. 
The memorial service with military honors will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, December 13, 
2008, at J. Henry Stuhr Inc., Northwoods Chapel, 2180 Greenridge Road, North Charleston, 
S.C.

Anderson, Bernhardt 

Bernhardt Anderson, 97, of River Bend, died Dec. 6, 2008, at Craven Regional 
Medical Center. 
He is survived by his daughter, Nancy Smyth of Burnaby, B.C., Canada. 
He served in the U.S. Marine Corps and retired from management with Whiting 
Milk in Massachusetts. 
No services have been planned.

Godley, Lessie Bell Hill 

Lessie Bell Hill Godley, 87, of Maysville, died Dec. 9, 2008, at Craven Regional 
Medical Center. 
A funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at White Oak Missionary Baptist 
Church, Maysville. Burial will be in the White Oak Cemetery. 
He is survived by a daughter, Selma Ruth Dove of Queens, N.Y.; a son, Chester 
Godley of Maysville; a brother, William Grant Hill of Greensboro; and two sisters, 
Christine Hill Dudley and Evelyn Hill Scott, both of Maysville.

Hovis, William Boyd "Bill" 

William Boyd "Bill" Hovis, 77, of New Bern, passed away Dec. 12, 2008. 
He was a dedicated member of Crossroads Baptist Church. 
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn "Billie" Hovis, and his son, William Scott Hovis, 
both of the home; one daughter, Marcy Lindell and husband, Brian, of New Bern; 
one brother, Harold Joe Hovis of Lewes, Del.; and two granddaughters, Jackie and 
Hailey. 
Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 15, 2008 at New Bern 
Memorial Cemetery, with the Rev. Buford Lewis officiating.

Troutner, Margaret Julia Foreman 

Margaret Julia Foreman Troutner, 94, of New Bern, died Dec. 12, 2008, at Craven 
Regional Medical Center. 
She is survived by her husband, Orrie Troutner of New Bern; three sons, Robert 
Troutner of New Bern, David Troutner of Zebulon and Carl Lupton of South Carolina; 
15 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
