Obituary of Ernestine Hamilton Guyton ~ 2008

Gupton, Ernestine Ernestine Hamilton Guyton, 74, of 2402 Richmond Court, New Bern, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Wednesday, December 3, 2008, after a brief illness. Ernestine was born on August 5, 1934, in Charleston, S.C., to Ernest and Caroline (Carrie) Hamilton. She graduated from Rivers High School in Charleston in 1952 and worked as an X-ray technologist at Roper Hospital in Charleston. She was married on December 8, 1955, to Charles A. Guyton, and moved to New Bern in 1970 when Charles accepted a manager's position with Lance Inc. She was employed with K-Mart in New Bern for many years, retiring in 2000. She was a devoted wife and mother, well known for her many hours of faithful service as a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church, where she and Charles coordinated the Prayer Gram ministry and where she served as chairperson of the church's greeters program, Wednesday night supper committee and fellowship committee. Visiting residents of area nursing homes was a ministry very dear to her heart. Many in the community were blessed by her compassion and willingness to always be an advocate for those in need. Her parents preceded her in death. In addition to her beloved husband of 52 years, she is survived by two sons, Charles A. Guyton Jr. and wife, Linda, of Louisburg, and Scott E. Guyton and wife, Marsha, of New Bern; two sisters, Caroline H. Mize of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., and Frances Hamilton of James Island, S.C.; and three grandchildren, Zachary Guyton, Caroline Guyton and Grant Guyton. The family will receive friends at 1 p.m. Sunday, December 7, 2008, at Tabernacle Baptist Church, 616 Broad St., New Bern. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. at the church, officiated by the Rev. James Williford. Burial will follow in Greenleaf Cemetery in New Bern. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Tabernacle Baptist Church Family Life Center Building Fund, P.O. Box 1510, New Bern, N.C. 28563.
