John N. Staten, Sr. WINTERVILLE – Mr. John Nathaniel Staten, Sr., 60, died Monday, Jan. 26, 2004. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Pinewood Memorial Park. Mr. Staten was a native of Craven County and worked in retail for many years, working for the former Nichols Department Store and The Dollar Store, now known as Home Bazaar. Due to various health reasons, Mr. Staten had been at home for the last five years. Among Mr. Staten’s many joys, was spending time preparing Bible verses for distribution. He often volunteered for the prayer line at Covenant United Methodist Church. Regardless of his health concerns, John will be remembered most fondly for his desires of witnessing the gospel of Jesus Christ to others. Mr. Staten was preceded in death by his mother, Roxie Abernathy Staten. He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Cheryl Hopewell Staten of the home; three sons, John N. Staten, Jr. and wife, Tracy of Kinston, Jack R. Staten and wife, Vicky, of Bayboro and Chris M. Staten of Connecticut; three daughters, Victoria S. Ducharme and husband, David, of Hilton Head, S.C., Donna S. Adams and husband, Chris, of South Dakota and Paula M. Staten of the home; special niece, Ashley Gish of the home; three grandchildren, John N. Staten III, Jack R. Staten Jr., Lauren Huff, Hillary Huff, Brent Huff, Aaron Adams, Mackenzie Staten, Spencer Ducharme and Ethan Ducharme; great-grandchild, Felicity Staten; father, Ivan N. Staten of Santa Rosa, Calif., brother, James I. Staten and wife, Gay, of Bracey, Va.; and special aunt, Ruby Matkins and husband, Matthew, of Washington.
