MARSHALLBERG - Evelyn Chadwick, 83, of Marshallberg died May 29, 2008, at home. 
Services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, June 2, 2008, at Marshallberg Baptist Church with 
the Rev. Doug Williams officiating. Burial will follow at Through the Woods Cemetery. 
She was born in Bay St. Louis, Miss., Nov. 19, 1924. 
Survivors include her husband of 62 years, Earl McDonald Chadwick of Marshallberg; sons,
 Darryl Chadwick of Marshallberg and Temple Chadwick of Gloucester; daughters, Bonnie 
Nelson of Straits and Sharon Willis of Harkers Island; a sister, Dorothy Bounds of Texas; 
12 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. 
The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, June 1, 2008, at the church.

Register, Ethel Ann 

Ethel Ann Register, 76, of Mollusk, Va., died May 23, 2008. 
She was born in New Bern, N.C., the daughter of the late Herbert and Annie Wilcox. A 
devoted Navy wife for over 30 years, she spent her professional life in municipal government 
administration. 
Surviving are her husband of 55 years, Marvin O. Register, Cdr. U.S. Navy (Ret.); daughter, 
Lou Ann R. Downs of Warrenton, Va.; and son, Dell Register Jr. of Charlottesville, Va. 
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, June 6, at Bethel United Methodist Church, 
Lively, Va. Interment will be at 11 a.m. Friday, June 20, at Quantico National Cemetery, 
Quantico, Va.

Horton, Jessie Morgan 

Jessie Morgan Horton, 90, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, May 31, at Craven 
Regional Medical Center. She was born on December 19, 1917 in Chatham County. For 
many years she worked in textiles in Carrboro and Apex, and alongside her husband on their 
tobacco farm. She grew up in Martha's Chapel Christian Church. After marriage she joined 
Bells Baptist Church near Jordan Lake, and in her later years was an active member of the 
Jennie Porter Sunday school class. She enjoyed working in her flowers and the family 
vegetable garden. She played basketball at Bells High School and was an avid ACC 
basketball fan. 
She was preceded in death by her parents, J.B. and Darius Morgan, and by her husband, 
William Horace (W.H.) Horton. She is survived by her son, CMSgt. (Ret.) Jimmie H. Horton, 
and his wife, Jeanne, of Tullahoma, Tenn., and her daughter, the Rev. Charlene Pierce Guider, 
and her husband, Doug of New Bern. She has four grandchildren, Reed Horton of Tullahoma, 
Tenn.; Cheryl Griggs, and her husband Tony, of Galliton, Tenn.; Dale Horton, and his wife, 
Chris of Orlando, Fla.; and Hillary Pierce of Wilmington. She has six great-grandchildren, 
Rebekah Horton, of Nashville, Tenn., Ambralin Griggs and Alexis Griggs, of Galliton, Tenn. 
and Bradley, Abigail and Andrew Horton of Orlando, Fla. 
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. at Apex Funeral Home, 550 W. Williams St. (Highway 55), 
Apex on Monday June 2. A funeral service will be held at Bells Baptist Church on Tuesday, 
June 3 at 11 a.m. with the Reverends Rick Washington and Danny Allen officiating. A 
graveside service will follow at the Bells Baptist Church Cemetery on Horton Pond Road. 
Her family would like to thank her home church family for their care during her final years in 
the Bells Church community near Apex and the Centenary UMC and Trinity UMC families for

Koonce, George Thomas 

George Thomas Koonce, 82, of New Bern died June 1, 2008 at Britthaven of New Bern. 
Mr. Koonce retired from the North Carolina Department of Transportation and worked many 
years at the Metropolitan Club. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Wilson Koonce 
and his stepson James Sard. 
He is survived by four stepdaughters, Joyce Butts and husband Lester, Deborah White and 
husband Ted and Dawn Hardesty and husband John all of New Bern and Nancy Huffstetler 
and husband Tom of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; 13 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. 
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, June 3, 2008 at 2 p.m. at Greenleaf Memorial 
Park Lakeside Chapel.

Toler, Annie Daniels 


Annie Daniels Toler, 86, of New Bern died Sunday. 
Toler was a member of Pleasant Acres Free Will Baptist Church. 
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Cotten Chapel with the Rev. Mike Scott 
officiating. Burial will follow at Greenleaf Memorial Park. Visitation will be one hour prior to the 
service at the funeral home. 
She is survived by her son Lenwood Toler of New Bern; four daughters, Peggy Vernelson of 
Vanceboro, Dorothy Dawson of Gates County, Linda Faye Smith and Frances Richardson 
both of New Bern; one sister, Mary Elizabeth Daniels of New Bern; 16 grandchildren and six 
great-grandchildren.

Copper, Jerry 


Jerry Copper, 66, of Brooklyn, N.Y., died Saturday, May 31, 2008, at Beth Israel Hospital, 
New York. 
He was a native of New Bern. He retired from the Allan Zipper Manufacturing Corporation 
of New York. 
The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 7, 2008, at First Missionary Baptist 
Church, Church Street, Kenansville. Burial will be in the Dobson Cemetery, Magnolia. 
He is survived by his wife, Pinkey McArthur Copper of Brooklyn, N.Y., and one son, Kevin 
Copper of New Bern.

Haggett, Marion E. 

Marion E. Haggett went home to be with her Lord and Savior on June 3, 2008. She was born 
March 5, 1910, in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada, of Cyrus I. and Mary E. (Meade) 
Howland, but lived her childhood years with them in Stillwater and Old Town, Maine. 
After marriage to her husband, Edward G. Haggett Jr. of Portland, Maine, she lived in Malden, 
Mass.; Washington, D.C.; Hyattsville, Md.; Spring Lake Heights and Spring Lake, N.J.; Boynton 
Beach, Fla.; and finally in New Bern and Grantsboro, N.C. 
As a young woman, she loved acting in school and church plays. She was a Sunday school 
teacher. She was an ardent wife and mother who loved to cook and kept a beautiful home. She 
enjoyed playing the piano and, in later years, the organ. She loved bridge and was a very 
competitive player. She and her husband loved to travel, spending many summers in Maine near 
family or visiting such far-away places as the Holy Land, the British Isles, Germany (while Ed III 
was stationed there), Canada, Alaska, Hawaii and most other states. She frequently found herself 
taking care of ill neighbors and finally her husband, whose health was failing in his last years. She 
maintained an active relationship with her Savior for all these many years until Alzheimer's took 
away her cognitive power. 
She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Edward Haggett Jr.; brother, Charles; two sisters, 
Bertha and Julia; children, Patricia, Leroy and Mary Ann and many other friends. She is survived and 
will be missed by her son, Edward Haggett III and his wife, Carol (Schipper) Haggett, of New Bern; 
grandsons, Edward IV of Newport News, Va., Douglas and his wife, Sharon, of Wilmington, N.C., 
Dennis and his wife, Christine, of Bridgeton, N.C., Christopher and his wife, Melanie, of New Bern, 
N.C.; and her great-grandchildren, Michelle, Jennifer, Stephen, Zachary and Kaitlin. She is also 
survived by several nieces and nephews whom she and her husband found time to visit during their 
many travels. 
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer's Association or the Bridgeton United Methodist Church 
Building Fund are suggested. 
Ashes will be interred in Evergreen Cemetery in Portland, Maine. A memorial service is planned for
June 20, 2008, at 11 a.m. at Bridgeton United Methodist Church.

Hill, Harvey T. 


Harvey T. Hill, 64, of Arapahoe died Sunday at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill. 
He was born in Kinston and lived the past 28 years in Arapahoe. He was a heavy-equipment 
operator for the N.C. Department of Transportation, a member and past chief of the Arapahoe 
Volunteer Fire Department, assistant fire marshal of Pamlico County, and fire instructor for 
Pamlico Community College and Craven County. 
The funeral service will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at the Southwood Memorial Christian Church in 
Kinston with Rick Vernon officiating. Interment will be in Deep Run Cemetery in Kinston. 
He is survived by his wife, Sheila L. Hill; five sons, John Harvey Hill of Arapahoe, Donald Hill of 
Pikeville, David Hill of Stantonsburg, Mark Burkette of Nashville, Tenn., and Christopher Burkette 
of Kinston; daughter, Brenda Burkette of LaGrange; mother and stepfather, Irene and Ron Hagell 
of Kinston; sister, Kathryn Kilpatrick of Lexington; and three grandchildren. 
A visitation will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Arapahoe Volunteer Fire Department,
 and the family will receive friends at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Southwood Memorial Christian Church 
in Kinston.

Kinsey, Thomas Earl 


Thomas Earl Kinsey, 57, of 4940 Highway 58, Pollocksville, died Monday, June 2, 2008, 
at Craven Regional Medical Center. 
He was a graduate with the Jones Senior High School Class of 1969 and was a member 
of St. Phillips Missionary Baptist Church. He served in the U.S. Army and was employed 
for over 30 years in North Carolina and Virginia as a cement finisher. 
The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, June 5, 2008, in St. Phillips Missionary Baptist 
Church with the Rev. Quincy Hill and the Rev. Kenneth Jordan officiating. Burial will be in 
Goshen Cemetery. 
He is survived by his mother, O'Kella Gray Kinsey of the home; one brother, William Kinsey; 
and one sister, Velverteen Chapman, both of Pollocksville. 
Viewing will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, June 4, 2008, at Rivers-Morgan Funeral

Morgan, Martha Ledford 

HAVELOCK - Martha Ledford Morgan, 75, of Havelock, died June 1, 2008 at Craven Regional 
Medical Center. 
She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Havelock. Martha enjoyed working in 
her flower garden and cooking for her family. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. 
During her life she touched many hearts and will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She 
was preceded in death by her sister, Mary Gardin. 
She is survived by her husband of 56 years, James Clarence Morgan; three sons, Kemmy Lee 
Morgan and wife, Claudia, David Morgan and wife, April, all of New Bern, and Jamie Morgan and 
wife, Kimberly, of Blacklick, Ohio; two sisters, Evelyn Barlowe and husband, Frank, of Hickory 
and Margaret Minnish and husband, Donald, of Nebo; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. 
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 7, 2008, at First United Methodist Church, 
Havelock. Burial will follow in Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery, Jacksonville, N.C.

Parrish, Janice Jones 

Janice Jones Parrish, 40, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday June 3, 2008, at Craven 
Regional Medical Center after a long, five-year battle with cancer. 
She was a loving, caring mother, daughter, sister and friend. 
She is survived by her mother, Joyce Jones of the home, two sons, James Jones of the home 
and Kevin Parrish of Greensboro, N.C.; two sisters, Julie Sedell and husband, Jack, and Sandra 
Hendrix and husband, Ronnie, all of New Bern; three nieces, Beth Sedell and Mary Hendrix of 
New Bern and Christina Hendrix of Buford, Ga.; two nephews, Michael and Buddy Sedell of New 
Bern; and one great-niece, Autumn Soucy of New Bern.

Roundtree, Jannie Watson 


Jannie Watson Roundtree, 62, of 2100 N.C. Highway Highway 43 North, Vanceboro, died 
Sunday, June 1, 2008, at Pitt County Memorial Hospital. 
She was a native of Charleston, S.C., and was educated in the Beaufort County schools, Big 
Estate, S.C. She was employed in home health care and was pastor of United House of 
Prayer of Craven County. 
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, June 6, 2008, at Queen's Chapel Free Will 
Baptist Church, Bailey's Lane, Vanceboro, with the Rev. Ronald Austin and the Rev. Charles

She is survived by her husband, Ernest Roundtree Sr. of the home; three sons, Ernest
