Barnes, Lendon Earl 

Lendon Earl Barnes, 81, of Grantsboro, died Thursday, May 28, 2009, at home.
He was an active member of Vandemere United Methodist Church. He was a proud member 
of the U.S. Air Force for 4 years, serving 3 in Korea and 1 in Japan and 12 in the reserves. 
He retired from Spag's, Inc., in Shrewsbury, Mass., as manager of the electrical department. 
He was a master mason receiving his 50-year service award and a 32nd degree Scottish Rite.
He served 25 years as a member of the Sudan Shriners, Mourners and Pamlico Co. Shrine 
Club. He was a charter member of AARP, Pamlico Co. Chapter #4723, as well as a member 
of the American Legion and VFW. He delivered meals on wheels for 15 years. He enjoyed 
senior citizens trips, mowing grass and bird watching.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William Andrew Barnes and Vera Barnes Jones, 
and brother, William Andrew Barnes Jr.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Priscilla I. Barnes; one son, David E. Barnes and wife, 
Denise, of Holden, Mass.; three daughters, Barbara Verdini and husband, Henry, of Holland, 
Mass., Martha Grant and husband, Michael, of Shrewsbury, Mass., and Susan Barnes and 
special friend, Nick Karcasinas, of Oxford, Mass.; one brother, Frankie Barnes and wife, 
Barbara, of Jacksonville, Fla.; one sister, Betty J. Purser of Bayboro; two sisters-in-law, 
Libby Barnes of Seymour, Tenn., and Mary Shapazian of Shrewsbury, Mass.; seven 
grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; several cousins, nieces and nephews.

To honor Lendon's wishes, there will be no services in Pamlico County. Interment will be in 
Mountain View Cemetery in Shrewsbury, Mass., at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family asked that memorial contributions be made to the Shriner's Children's 
Hospital, Drawer 490, New Bern, NC 28563.

Branigan, Anne Ward 

Anne Ward Branigan, 81, of New Bern, passed away Sunday June 7, 2009.
She was born April 25, 1928, in Dolgeville, N.Y. Anne graduated from St. Lawrence University 
in 1949, followed by a career with TWA and Delta Airlines as a Reservation Supervisor, but she 
is best remembered as a loving wife, mother and her grandchildren's biggest fan. 

Anne is survived by her husband, Robert J. Branigan of the home; one daughter, Leslie Antos 
and husband, Joe, of Elmira, N.Y.; her son, Jim Branigan and wife, Kathy, of Cumming, Ga.; 
and her grandchildren, Lexie and Dani Antos and Michael Branigan.

A wake will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. with recitation of the holy rosary at 7:30 p.m.Wednesday, 
June 10, 2009, at Cotten Funeral Home. A memorial mass will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 
11, 2009, at St. Paul Catholic Church.

Bratcher, Pauline Higgins

Pauline "Ted" Higgins Bratcher, 84, of Trenton, passed away June 1, 2009, at CarolinaEast 
Medical Center.
Ted spent the last two years of her life at the Courtyards of Berne Village. She grew up in 
Trenton and attended ECU. She spent several years as a teacher's aide at West Craven High 
School. She was a wonderful Christian lady and Sunday school teacher, active during her life 
with several churches. She and her husband were original members of Sherwood Forest FWB 
Church in New Bern and later returned to her childhood church, Friendship FWB Church in 
Trenton. She was an active member of several organizations, including Women's Auxiliary, 
Women's Home Demonstration Club, United Daughters of The Confederacy and the Trenton 
Chapter #86 of The Order of The Eastern Star.

She goes on to join her family in heaven, her loving husband of 52 years, Preston "Mack" 
Bratcher; her parents, Alex and Florence Higgins; and two sisters, Doris Virginia Higgins 
and Belva "Boots" Thompson.

She is survived by her daughter, Diane West and her companion, Forrest Morton; two 
granddaughters, Jennifer and Kimberly West, all of the home; her nieces, Kay Huggins of 
Whiteville, Pat Trotter of Rockingham, Ann Piner of New Bern, Linda Gadomski and Carolyn 
Odham, both of Jasper, Marsha Chagaris of New Bern, Dee Dee Bongiovanni of Macon, Ga., 
and Mary Muraglia of New Bern; nephews, Odric Adams of New Bern, Charles Bratcher of 
Arapahoe, Omega Howell of Hickory, Richard Bratcher of New Bern, Lynn Bratcher, formerly 
of New Bern; and many loving friends of the church and community.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 3, 2009, at Friendship FWB Church 
on Ten Mile Fork Road in Trenton. Burial with Eastern Star rites will follow in the church 
cemetery. The family will receive friends following graveside services. Viewing will be held 
one hour prior to the service at the church.

Brock, Vera Wallace

Vera Wallace Brock, age 88, of Highland Village, Texas, and formerly of Davis, died 
Tuesday, June 2, 2009. 
She was born Nov. 18, 1920, in Duplin County and was the daughter of the late Robert 
Benjamin Wallace and the late Lula Anderson Wallace Stroud. She was also predeceased 
by her husband, Oscar Brock. 

Mrs. Brock was retired from the state of North Carolina as Deputy Clerk of Court. 

Surviving are her loving children, Dorette Britt and husband, Richard, Wayne Brock and wife, 
Ernestine, and Chester Brock; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and brothers, R.B. 
Wallace and Clifton Wallace. 

Funeral service will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 6, 2009, at Quinn-McGowen Funeral Home 
Wallace Chapel, with the Rev. Tim Mateer officiating. Burial will follow in Brock Family Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday, one hour prior to the funeral service 
at Quinn-McGowen Funeral Home in Wallace.

Clark, Margaret Ray Cayton

Mrs. Margaret Ray Cayton Clark, age 87, a resident of 1302 Possum Track Road, Chocowinity, 
died peacefully Friday, May 29, 2009, at Beaufort County Medical Center in Washington.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 2, 2009, from the Chapel of Paul Funeral 
Home, Washington, conducted by Pastor Henry Horne and her grandson, Pastor Gene Williams, 
Jr. Burial will follow in Pamlico Memorial Gardens, Washington.

Mrs. Clark's grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Mrs. Clark was born in the Edward community of Beaufort County on August 4, 1921. She was 
the daughter of the late Henry Wade Cayton and Phoebe Bennett Cayton. Mrs. Clark was a 
cosmetologist with Cinderella Beauty Shop from 1958 to 1964. Later, she operated a beauty 
shop out of her home. Mrs. Clark loved to sew and was known for her sewing. She made crafts 
and sold them out of her home. Mrs. Clark was a member of Union Chapel Free Will Baptist 
Church and taught the Primary Sunday School Class for several years. "She was a great mother 
and a friend to everyone who met her."

On March 27, 1940, she married Alonza Dumay Clark, who preceded her in death, July 29, 1998.

Survivors include one daughter, Linda Williams and her husband, Gene, of Vanceboro; seven 
sons, Dumay Clark and his wife, Christine, Tommy Clark and his wife, Ann, all of Chocowinity; 
Terry Clark and his wife, Christy, David Clark and his wife, Shelia, all of Washington; Mike Clark 
and his wife, Debbie, of Blounts Creek; Clifton Clark and his wife, Betty, of Cove City; Osborne 
Clark and his wife, Barbara, of Greenville; her twin sister, Elizabeth Edwards of Chocowinity; 19 
grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Mrs. Clark was preceded in death by three sisters, 
Louise Johnson of Fayetteville, Lois Bonner of Washington, Lillian McRoy of Chocowinity and 
four brothers, Donald Cayton of Virginia, Alton Cayton of Chocowinity, Mayhew Cayton of 
Chocowinity, and Wade Cayton of Wilmington.

Flowers are appreciated or memorials may be made to the Union Chapel Free Will Baptist 
Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 38, Chocowinity, NC 27817. 

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, June 1, 2009, at Paul Funeral Home,

Cox, Ruth Barker Ipock

Ruth Barker Ipock Cox, 84, of New Bern, died May 28, 2009, at CarolinaEast Medical Center.
She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and will be greatly missed. She enjoyed cooking 
for family and friends and gardening.

She is survived by her son, Luther Cox, and wife, Vivian, of the Rhems Community; one 
daughter, Sonja Yost of Hyattsville, Md.; four grandchildren, Michael Yost of Hyattsville, 
Md., Teresa Yost of Philadelphia, Pa., Monica Gray and husband, James, of Trenton; 
Stephen Cox and wife, Sandy, of New Bern; and one great-grandson, John Yost.

Services will be held at 7 p.m. tonight at Cotten Chapel, with the Rev. Connie Stutts officiating.

Frankie Elijah Credle, 57, a native of the Mesic community, died March 24, 2009, on the 
Lady Mary fishing vessel.
He was a member of Mt. Olive M.B. Church.

Davis, Braydon James

He was born May 1, 2009, the son of Michael and Tracie Davis of New Bern, N.C.

Braydon is survived by his parents; two sisters, Zoey and Alyssa "Lily;" paternal grandparents, 
Dennis and Beverly Burns of Richmond, Texas; maternal grandparents, Daryl and Hortensia 
Hill of Ottawa, Canada; paternal grandparents, Mike and Judy Davis of Alliance, N.C.; 
great-grandmother, Romona Burns of Dewey, Okla.; and great-grandfather, Don Davidson 
of Parkersburg, W.Va. He is also survived by many aunts, uncles and cousins.

be donated to the Pitt Memorial Children's Hospital.

Davis, Ruby Grimes

Ruby Grimes Davis, 89, of Grifton, passed away on Tuesday, June 2, 2009. Mrs. Davis 
was the daughter of the late John and Lucy Kennedy Grimes of Lenoir County. In addition 
to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, James Wilton Davis, and sisters, 
Edna Ruth Becton Jones and Ellen Smith. She was a lifetime member of Grainger Baptist 
Church and retired from Contentnea School, where she served in the cafeteria for 33 years. 
She was strong in her faith, loved her family and friends and enjoyed life fully. 
Survivors include her daughter, Linda D. Warren, and husband, Carlton "Pete," of Grifton; 
son, Jimmie Wilton Davis, of New Bern; grandchildren, Ryan Davis and Tyler Davis, and 
their mother, Cathy Fulcher, Ricky Smith and Susan Smith; great-grandchildren, Lindsey 
Smith, Stephanie Smith and Zachary Smith, and their mother, Cindy Ward Smith; and 
sisters, Hazel Houghton of Grifton and Bessie Allen and husband, Gid, of Maury.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, June 4, 2009, at Howard-Carter Funeral 
Home, with the Rev. Benji Ramseur and Ivey White officiating. Entombment will follow at 
Pinelawn Memorial Park. Family and friends are invited to gather at her home for fellowship.

Devone, Earlie Brimage  
 
Earlie Brimage Devone,58, of 3440 Apache Drive, Raleigh died Thursday, May 28, 2009, 
at Wake Medical Center.
She was a 1969 graduate of New Bern High School and a graduate of St. Augustine's 
College, Raleigh. Her employment included the Milwaukee City Government, N.C. 
Department of Motor Vehicles for 25 years and Conn Elementary School, Raleigh. 
Her church memberships were with St. Paul M.B. Church, New Bern, and currently 
Deliverance Baptist Church, Angier, where she served on the Mother's Board.

Her funeral service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 2, 2009, at St. Paul M.B. Church, 208 
Perrytown Loop Rd., with the Rev. L.A. Dillahunt and Rev. S.L. Carney, officiating. Burial 
will be in the Perrytown Community Cemetery.

She is survived by her husband, Raymond Devone, Jr. of the home; her daughter, 
Malissia Devone of Raleigh; her mother, Malissia Brimage of New Bern; one step-daughter, 
Wanda Cannady of Raleigh; two step-sons, Gary Ray Devone of Raleigh and Reginald 
Orlando Devone of Los Angeles; three brothers, Columbus F. Brimage, Sr. and George 
L. Brimage, both of New Bern, and James Allen Brimage, of Los Angeles; four sisters, 
Bertha Brimage Bush, Eunice Brimage Hicks, Brenda Brimage Henry and Wanda E. 
Brimage, all of New Bern; and five grandchildren.

Clifford Carl Erickson, 87, of New Bern, died June 7, 2009, at home.
He was a member of Bridgeton United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley M. Erickson; two sons, Lawrence Erickson of Colorado 
Springs, Colo., and David Erickson of Denver, Colo.; one daughter, Susan DeLong of New 
Bern; and two grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, June 12, 2009, at Bridgeton United

Estelle, Sandra 

KINSTON - Ms. Sandra Estelle, 49, of Kinston, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 
7, 2009. She died peacefully at her home, surrounded by her loving sons and family.
The funeral service will be conducted Wednesday, June 10 at 2 p.m. at Edwards Funeral 
Home, officiated by Calvin Heath. Burial will follow in West View Cemetery, Kinston.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. Sandra was 
born March 23, 1960, in Bristol, Va., to the late Herbert Eugene Blaylock and Nellie E. 
Privette. She moved to Eastern North Carolina with her family in 1966 and has been a 
resident of Kinston since 1998.

Sandra was a very active and creative person, working as a fitness instructor for Galaxy 
Sports. She worked with her sister, Fran, for many years at SanFranSisCo Dancewear and 
Embroidery. In addition, she maintained a home-based business as a graphics artist and 
designer. She loved the beautiful home that she so carefully and artfully decorated. Even 
through the struggle of her illness, her home provided her peace and comfort not only for 
herself, but for those sharing their time with her. Her greatest reward in life was being the 
devoted mother of her four sons and grandmother to nine wonderful grandchildren.

In addition to her father, Sandra was preceded in death by a sister, Sherron Blaylock Jones; 
a granddaughter, Victoria Gaskins; step-father, Delano R. Cox; and father-in-law, Ralph Bennett.

She is survived by a large family including: her loving sons, Joseph Gaskins (Marla), 
Steven Gaskins, Kevin Gaskins (Courtney) and Daniel Gaskins (Nina), all of Kinston; 
nine grandchildren, Hayley, Jayden, Dylan, Taylor, Tyra, Ryan, Julia, Logan and Emerson; 
step-daughter, Patsy Longgo of Connecticut; mother and step-father, Nellie and Rex Byrd 
of Sims; brother, Herbert E. Blaylock Jr. (Kim), of Elizabethtown, Pa.; five sisters, Judy 
Kilpatrick and Linda Hopkins (Louis), both of Belhaven, Patsy Howard (Billy) of Goldsboro, 
Gail Garrett (Ronald) of Pantego and Fran McKinney (Wayne) of Kinston; step-brothers, 
Myron Cox and Delaney Cox; mother-in-law, Patricia Bennett; and the faithful father of her 
children, Kenneth A. Gaskins of Vanceboro.

Sandra will be sadly missed by a host of caring friends and many nieces and nephews. 
As a brain tumor patient, Sandra would be pleased that in lieu of flowers, memorial 
contributions be made to any Relay For Life chapter.

Geiss, Harold Luther  

Harold Luther Geiss, 69, of New Bern, died June 8, 2009, at home.
He served his country in theU.S. Navy, and he was a member of Peace Episcopal 
Church.

He is survived by his wife, Judy Geiss of the home; two daughters, Wendy Geiss of 
Brooklyn, N.Y., and Catherine Geiss of Farmingville, N.Y.; two step-daughters, Sarah 
Dominguez and husband, Frank, of Enterprise, Ala., and Sylvia Stichert of Ardmore, 
Okla.; one step-son, William Stichert, and wife, Carrie, of Duncan, Okla.; two brothers, 
Walter Geiss of New Bern; Lewis Titus of Bend, Ore.; one sister, Kathy Biscarra of 
Oregon; and seven grandchildren.

Services will be held at 11a.m. Friday, June 12, 2009, at Cotten Chapel, with the Rev. 
Malcolm Roberts and the Rev. John Watford officiating, followed by burial at New Bern 
Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 11, 2009, at the 
funeral home.

Gibbons, James Anthony (Bud)

On May 29, 2009, James Anthony (Bud) Gibbons passed at his Charlotte residence with his 
loving spouse Mary and two sons at his side. Jim was born September 20, 1929, in Floral 
Park, New York, the fifth of 5 children. He graduated from Chaminade High School (Long
 Island. N.Y.), went on to graduate from Dayton University and attended University of Dallas 
for graduate studies. Jim served two years in the U.S. Army stationed in Maryland.
Jim married Mary Higgins (of Floral Park, New York) on October 8, 1955, and enjoyed more 
than 50 years together. Over these 50 plus memorable years, Jim and Mary resided in Long 
Island, Connecticut, Michigan, Texas, and settled in New Jersey to raise their family. They 
have thoroughly enjoyed their four children, and nine grandchildren. The children are James 
of Essex Jct. Vermont, Michael of Basking Ridge N.J., Patricia of Salt Lake City, Utah and 
Kevin of Charlotte. Jim and Mary retired to New Bern in 1995 and recently moved to Charlotte.

Jim had many talents and interests besides those of loving father and active volunteer. 
Church was priority to Jim and he gave of his time as both lector and Holy Name Society. 
Jim donated more than 10 gallons of blood throughout his life. He successfully pursued art 
as seen in his many print drawings, paintings, stained glass works, and thousands of 
photographs. Jim was a leader with the Boy Scouts of America and all three of his sons 
achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. He gave countless hours of coaching duties with his 
children's many sporting activities. He was a volunteer for the Red Cross Road to Recovery 
as well as the Radio Reading Service for the blind. Jim loved family first and foremost, and 
cared more about others around him especially the less fortunate. In his spare time, Jim 
pursued travel, golf and tennis. Jim lived a wonderful life and left behind many positive 
indelible imprints.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 2, 2009, in the Chapel at 
St. Gabriel Catholic Church with the Rev. Francis J. O'Rourke officiating. Interment followed 
at Forest Lawn East in Matthews, North Carolina.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations may be made to Southminster Foundation, 
Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte Region, or St. Paul Building Fund in New Bern.

Godette, Virginia Mae McCabe  
 
HAVELOCK - Virginia Mae McCabe Godette, 93, 325 Godette Road, died Thursday, June 
4, 2009, at Britthaven of Havelock.
She was a member of Pilgrim Rest Christian Church and served as treasurer of the 
Missionary Board, member of the Mass and Senior Choirs, the Mother's Board and was a 
member of the Carteret-Craven Women Chorus.

She is survived by her two daughters, Lavern Thomas of West Lafayette, Ind., and Velma 
Simmons of Havelock; three brothers, the Rev. Roy McCabe of Havelock, Artis McCabe 
of Raleigh and Charles McCabe Jr. of Pikesville, Md.; three sisters, Mabel Ross and Lossie 
Carter, both of Havelock, and Rosetta Stevenson of Somerset, N.J.; five grandchildren; 
nine great-grandchildren.

Grishkat Jr., Otto A. 

Otto A. Grishkat Jr., 66, MGySGT, USMC (RET), died June 6, 2009, at CarolinaEast Medical 
Center.
MGySGT Grishkat was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., the son of the late Otto A. Grishkat Sr. and 
Violet Morgan. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Paul A. 
Grishkat.

He joined the U.S. Marine Corps after graduation from high school and served his country 
honorably for 28 years, retiring in 1987. During his career, he had two tours in Vietnam and 
for more than a year, was a funeral escort for soldiers that were in killed in Vietnam. He loved 
animals of all kinds, especially wildlife.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth Ann "Judy" Coller, and one sister, Leah Grishkat, of Sarasota, 
Fla.

A memorial service with full military honors will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 10, 
2009, at Cotten Chapel. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the
 funeral home.

She was a native of the Ernul community and a member of Mary Martha M.B. Church.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, May 31, 2009, at Mary Martha M.B. Church,

She is survived by her two sons, William Allen Scott of Baltimore, Md., and Rev. Calvin

COVE CITY - Henry Lee Gurganus, 81, of Cove City, died May 30, 2009, at CarolinaEast 
Medical Center.
He was a member of Cove City FWB Church where he served as a deacon and Sunday school 
teacher. Lee is a U.S. Navy Veteran of WW II and the Korean Conflict.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ben and Lydia Gurganus; his first wife, Elizabeth 
"Libby" Kellum Gurganus; and two sisters, Dot Gurganus Jones and Irene Gurganus Williams.

Lee is survived by his wife, Louise P. Gurganus; one son, Dennis Lee Gurganus of New Bern; 
one step-daughter, Cathy Currin and her husband Wayne of Oxford; one grandson, Daniel 
Currin, special niece Kathy Haislip of Cove City, and his faithful companion Bear.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, June 2, 2009, at Cove City FWB Church 
with Rev. John Johnson and Rev. Clem Heath officiating. Burial will follow in Cove City 
Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

Hamada, Hatsue Ikemiyagi 

Hatsue Ikemiyagi Hamada, 88 years, died May 30, 2009, at her home in New Bern. 
Her viewing will be held on the evening of Thursday, June 4 from 6 to 8 p.m. and her memorial 
service will be at 7 p.m. on Friday, June 5, 2009, at Pollock-Best Funerals and Cremations, 
located at 2015 Neuse Boulevard in New Bern. Mr. Gary Cyprus of Havelock will be officiating.

Mrs. Hamada was born June 20, 1920, in Naha, Okinawa. She then moved to Japan and 
served under the Japanese Imperial Army as a nurse in World War II. After the war, she 
became a business owner. She married George T. Hamada on May 22, 1955. They began 
raising their two daughters in Okinawa and later moved to Guam. In 1983, Mr. and Mrs. 
Hamada moved to Michigan. In 1985, they finally settled in North Carolina. Hatsue had a 
love for Okinawan music and dance. She will be remembered most for her charming ways 
and her friendly smile. She helped people in any way possible and adored her grandchildren. 

She is survived by her two daughters, Annie Hamada Penafiel and her husband, Alvin, of New 
Bern and Christine Hamada of Guam; three grandchildren, Emi Hamada Penafiel of New York 
and Pearl and Joseph Hamada Cascasan of Guam; and one brother, Shojiro Yamashita of 
Okinawa. 

The family wishes to express their gratitude for the care and support extended to them by Dr. 
Mark Moeller and his staff and also to the nurses and staff of Craven County Home Health 
and Hospice.

Margaret Maggiolo, 85, of New Bern, formerly of Newport, died Wednesday, May 27, 2009, 
at Bayview Nursing Center in New Bern.
Mrs. Maggiolo was a veteran and served in the U.S.M.C. during World War II, 1944-1945.

Services will be held at noon Saturday at St. Egbert's Catholic Church, 17th and Arendell St. 
Morehead City, with Father Doug Smiley officiating. Interment will follow in Gethsemane 
Memorial Park with military honors.

She is survived by her daughter, Judy Paramore and husband, Ken, of Greenville; her son, 
Lewis Maggiolo and wife, Linda, of New Bern; sister, Pauline Korzi and husband, Steve, of 
Weirton, W.Va.; brother, Joe Seganos of Seattle, Wash.; four grandchildren, Kathy Coggins 
and husband, Jason, Kevin Paramore and wife, Brooke, Jennifer Ritchie and husband, Jeff, 
and Stephanie Maggiolo; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, John Maggiolo.

Gloria "Glo" Cervantes Merrill, 70, of Havelock, died May 30, 2009, at CarolinaEast 
Medical Center.
Glo was a very happy, loving, giving and caring wife, mother, grandmother and friend. 
She was known to her friends as Glo because she was a light in the lives of the people 
she knew. She was very active in her children's lives and she was an active bingo player. 
In 1968, Glo became an American citizen and since moving to Havelock, she has been 
a member of the Philippino-American Society. She will be greatly missed by all who 
knew her and she will be remembered for her motto "forgive and move on."

Left to cherish her memory are her husband of fifty years, Erwin H. Merrill; three sons, 
Henry James Merrill and his wife, Liz, of Oahu, Hawaii, Joseph Scott Merrill and his 
wife, Alison, of Riverside, Calif., Kimo Luewikie and his wife, Adele, of Oahu, Hawaii; 
and one daughter, Jackie M. Hardin and her husband, Gregory, of Denton, Texas; 
nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She is also survived by two brothers, 
Rubin and Yollie Apostol and one sister, Ofelia Meranda, all of the Philippines and 
numerous nieces and nephews.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, June 5, 2009, at 
Annunciation Catholic Church in Havelock. The family will receive friends from 5 to

Rardon, Myrtle Moore 

Myrtle Moore Rardon lived 92 years on her own terms as a Southern lady, well traveled 
throughout the world and across the United States. Myrtle was fond of homestyle cooking, 
politics, pets and all animals, and especially family. Her strong will and determination 
guided and supported her friends and family. She will be dearly missed. 
Mrs. Rardon was a native of Edgecombe County but a longtime resident of Craven County, 
and a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church, where she was very active until her 
later years. She was a member of the Republican Women's Club, New Bern Garden Club, 
Christian Women's Club and a Daughter of the American Revolution.

She was the daughter of the late David Ashley and Martha Long Moore, and was preceded 
in death by her husband of more than 60 years, Jack R. Rardon.

She is survived by her son, John Rardon, and his wife, Terry, of Florence, S.C.; three 
sisters, Doris Ashley M. Smith, and Mattie Long Peterson, both of New Bern, and 
Kathleen Moore of Wilson; and a grandson, Matthew Ryan Rardon of Clemson, S.C.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8 p.m. Monday at Cotten Funeral Home. 
Funeral services will be on Tuesday, June 9, 2009, at 11a.m. at First Presbyterian

Rasberry, Rigdon Freeman 

Rigdon Freeman Rasberry, 62, died on Sunday, May 31, 2009, at CarolinaEast Medical Center. 
Mr. Rasberry was born a native of Craven County, where he attended the public schools, 
graduating from New Bold Training School in 1964. Shortly after high school, he moved to 
Brooklyn, N.Y., where he was employed with the city as a city code and blueprint reader. He 
returned to his native home in 1988 and was employed with his brothers' company, Rasberry 
Construction Company.

A funeral service for Mr. Rasberry will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 6, 2009, at Rio Grande 
M.B. Church, with the Rev. Vandy Mitchell officiating. He will be buried at the Rasberry Family 
Cemetery.

Mr. Rasberry leaves to cherish memories of him four sisters, Barbara and husband, Bishop 
W.H. Mitchell, of Winterville, Rose Rasberry, Ethel and husband, Griffin Wilson, of New Bern, 
and Mayline and husband, Ricky Outlaw, of New Bern; three brothers, Donnie Rasberry and 
wife, Patricia, of Dover, Bennie Rasberry and wife, Odessa, of Grifton, and Joseph Pruden and 
wife, Angela, of New Bern; a very special friend and devoted love, Clara Wright of New Bern;

Robinson, Joseph Raymond

Joseph Raymond Robinson, 73, of the Fairfield Harbour community, passed away on Tuesday, 
June 2, 2009. He served honorably in the U.S. Army and is retired from Sunoco after 37 and a 
half years of service. He relocated to New Bern from Philadelphia in 1993, and was an avid 
golfer and member of the Fairfield Harbour Men's Golf Association. 
Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Pollock-Best Funeral Chapel, with visitation 
immediately following the service. Burial will be at a later date at Whitemarsh Memorial Park 
in Horsham, Pa. 

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Shirley Newton Robinson, of Fairfield Harbour; two 
daughters, Cheryl Lee Robinson of Plymouth Meeting, Pa., and Sharon Robinson Hetman 
and husband, James, of Osprey, Fla.; brother, Warren E. Robinson of Sarasota, Fla.; and Ida

Mrs. Sanderlin is also survived by a sister, Josie Bratcher of Arapahoe, seven grandchildren; 
and four great-grandchildren.

A gathering of family and friends was held at the Norfolk Chapel of H.D. Oliver Funeral 
Apartments on Friday evening.

A memorial service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Sunday, June 7, 2009, in Arapahoe 
(Dawson's Creek) near the Shine Cemetery.

Spruill, Bessie Bell 

Bessie Bell Spruill, 99, of New Bern, died Tuesday, April 20, at CarolinaEast Medical Center.
She was a native of Plymouth and a devout member of Plymouth United Methodist Church. 
Declining health brought her to New Bern to be near family in recent years, and she enjoyed 
new friends while living at both the Bishop Home and the Berne Retirement Village. 
Affectionately known as Aunt Babbie, she was the keeper of family history, as well as a 
prodigious knitter and crocheter for family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry C. and Lula J. Spruill and by her sisters, 
Eva Sanderson, Ethel Rea and Mildred Martin. 

She is survived by nephews, Robert S. Martin of Wilmington, Henry M. Martin and David R. 
Martin, both of New Bern; nieces, Elizabeth M. Heritage of Wilmington and Faye S. Bennett 
of Charleston, S.C.; and many great-nephews and nieces.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 13, at Plymouth United Methodist 
Church.

Tuesday, October 11, 1949. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Roszel 
Swindell Sr. and Beulah Botsford Swindell. 
Jim is survived by his wife, Bertie "B.J." Swindell of the home; a son, James "Jimmy" 
Gregory Swindell and wife, Amanda, of Maysville; a daughter, Jennifer Swindell Eason 
and husband, Shane, of Nashville; a brother, David Swindell of Florida; and three 
stepchildren, Jason Rackley and spouse, Gray, of Rocky Mount, Brian Rackley and wife, 
Melinda, of Rocky Mount, Daryl Rackley and wife, Katie, of Raleigh; and two 
granddaughters, Ella and Hadessah.

Wetherington, Rev. Eddie Webster

Rev. Eddie Webster Wetherington, 93, of 222 Williams St., Roanoke Rapids, formerly 
of Clinton, died on Monday, May 25, 2009, in the Halifax Regional Medical Center.
Rev. Wetherington was born in Craven County on June 10, 1915, where he grew up. 
He was the son of the late William Southy and Hattie Morris Wetherington. He moved 
to Clinton in 1940 and resided there until November 2005, when he moved to Roanoke 
Rapids. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Leona Whitford of Vanceboro and 
Caddie Neely of Statesville, and four brothers, Lonnie, Timothy, Alfred and Sam, all of 
Vanceboro. Mr. Wetherington was a salesman by trade and a minister by calling.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Muriel J. Wetherington; a daughter, Joan W. 
Phillips of Roanoke Rapids; a son, Earl Hart of Gainesville, Fla.; a sister, Viola W. 
Harden of New Bern; granddaughter, Amy Williamson and husband, Mark, of Raleigh; 
and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 2, at Grove Park Baptist Church, 
with the Rev. Mike Shook and the Rev. Jimmy Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in 
the Clinton Cemetery.

He was a graduate of J. T. Barber High School and was a veteran of the U. S. Marine

She was a member of Bridgeton Free Will Baptist Church. She was a loving wife, mother and 
grandmother who loved crafting and gardening, and she was very artistic. Shirley was very 
compassionate and frequently sponsored needy children in the U.S. and in other countries. 
She was equally compassionate about animals. Her strong work ethic afforded her 42 years 
of service with Carolina Telephone.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Harry Floyd Bailey; one son, Brent Bailey and 
wife, April, of Cove City; her sister, Jewel Studer of Orlando, Fla.; and two grandchildren, 
George Daniel Hinson of Raleigh and Justin Cody Hinson of Cove City.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 27, 2009, at Cotten Chapel with the Rev.

Baker, Maxine E.

Maxine E. Baker, 86, of Havelock, went to be with the Lord on May 25, 2009. 
She was born in Cannelton, West Virginia, on March 13,1923. She served three years in the 
U.S. Marine Corps and was stationed in Arlington, Va. She worked for the U.S. Government 
for 33 years, retiring from the Naval Air Rework Facility, Cherry Point, N.C. She was a member 
of the Havelock community since 1945 and a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church 
of Havelock. She is preceded in death by her husband, Ralph L. Baker, whom she loved and 
missed dearly. She was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7315, Havelock. 
As a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars family, she served proudly in state department and 
local VFW Ladies Auxiliary offices for 45 years. She spent her life in devoting her time to many 
charities supported by the Ladies Auxiliary of Veterans of Foreign Wars, which included cancer 
aid and research and Veterans Hospitals throughout the state of North Carolina. Maxine worked 
deligently in the support of our Armed Forces and Retired Veterans. She was a loving devoted 
other to her two girls and will be missed more than we can say.

She is survived by two daughters, Linda D. Toney and fiance', Richard C.Vaughn, of Chesapeake, 
Va.; Joany W. Pardee and husband, Steven J.Pardee, of Plano, Texas; three grandchildren, Malissa 
Frenzel and husband, John, of Oregon and Matthew and Nathaniel Pardee, both of Plano, Texas; 
and her great-grandson, Tyler Johnson. She is also survived by a large VFW family throughout the 
state of North Carolina and many lifelong friends and neighbors. A memorial service will be held at 
2 p.m. Friday, June 26, 2009, at First UnitedMethodist Church in Havelock. Inurnment with military 
honors will be held at noon Monday, June 29, 2009, at Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery 
in Jacksonville.

Branigan, Anne Ward

Anne Ward Branigan, 81, of New Bern, passed away Sunday June 7, 2009.
She was born April 25, 1928, in Dolgeville, N.Y. Anne graduated from St. Lawrence 
University in 1949, followed by a career with TWA and Delta Airlines as a Reservation 
Supervisor, but she is best remembered as a loving wife, mother and her grandchildren's 
biggest fan. 

Anne is survived by her husband, Robert J. Branigan of the home; one daughter, Leslie 
Antos and husband, Joe, of Elmira, N.Y.; her son, Jim Branigan and wife, Kathy, of 
Cumming, Ga.; and her grandchildren, Lexie and Dani Antos and Michael Branigan.

A wake will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. with recitation of the holy rosary at 7:30 p.m.

Brinson, Lewis Franklin  

COLUMBUS - Lewis Franklin Brinson of Columbus, died Sunday, June 21, 2009.
Lewis was born in Pamlico County on July 3, 1916. He retired from Eastern Airlines after 
37 years of service and moved to North Carolina from Daytona Beach, Fla., in 1980. He 
was an avid gardener, beekeeper, and wine maker for many years and was a longtime 
member of Polk County Kiwanis up until the time of his death.

Lewis is survived by his wife of 70 years, Martha Kerr Brinson; daughter, Delores Brinson 
of Columbus; son, David Brinson of Marshall, Va.; and two grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held at a later date in Mooresville.

Carl Matthew Cannon Sr., 79, of Beaufort, died Friday, June 12, 2009, at his home.
Cannon was born in South River, the son of William L. and Aurie Dixon Cannon. He was a 
life-long commercial fisherman and the owner and operator of Cannon's Seafood in Beaufort. 
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, was well-known for his abilities to make 
and mend nets, and was an active member of Beaufort First Free Will Baptist Church.

Carter, Dorcas Elizabeth

Dorcas Elizabeth Carter, 96, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 26, 2009, at 
Commonwealth Assisted Living in Hampton, Virginia.Dorcas was the only daughter of five 
children born in New Bern to Sylvester W. and Olivia Martin Carter. After graduating from 
West Street High School, "Honey" as she was affectionately called, continued her education 
at State Normal School, Elizabeth City. She earned her BS degree in Elementary Education 
from Winston Salem Teachers College and Master's degree in Elementary Education from 
Boston University. With 39 years of distinctive service, she retired from F. R. Danyus School 
in New Bern.

She was a lifetime and dedicated member of St Peter's A.M.E. Zion Church, serving in many 
capacities. Her ability to console and mentor others was shared freely, including her services 
as a Gray Lady at Craven County Hospital. Dorcas was an avid historian of local events. In 
2001, she was interviewed by The News & Observer to give her account of the Great Fire of 
1922. She was also the source of ancestral information regarding her family on Portsmouth 
Island in the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

Preceded in death by her brothers, Caswell, Robert and Sylvester, Honey leaves to cherish 
her loving memory a brother and sister-in-law, James "Rudy" and Celestine Carter (Hampton, 
VA); sisters-in-law, Mary G. Carter (Raleigh ) and Ruth P. Carter (Riverside, Calif.); seven 
nieces, three nephews and many great nieces, great nephews, cousins, neighbors and friends.

A graveside service will be held at noon on Thursday, July 2, 2009, at Evergreen Cemetery with
 the Rev. Joseph C. George officiating. Viewing will be held from noon to 6 p.m. Wednesday, 
July 1, 2009, and family visitation and viewing will be held from 10 a.m. to 11:40 a.m. Thursday, 
July 2, 2009, at Rivers-Morgan Funeral Home, Inc., 701 West Street, New Bern.

VANCEBORO - Mr. Charles H. Cooke, 70, passed away on Thursday, June 18, 2009, at 
his home.
The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, in the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel 
in Vanceboro. Burial will follow in Celestial Memorial Gardens.

Charles was the son of the late Randolph and Erma Nobles Cooke. He was a native and 
lifelong resident of Vanceboro, and attended Farm Life High School. He also attended 
Macedonia Original Free Will Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Jimmy Cooke and a 
granddaughter, Chelsea Cooke.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Elizabeth Holland Cooke; sons, Ricky Cooke and 
wife, Christine, and Randy Cooke and wife, Shannon, all of Vanceboro; daughter, Penny 
and Mark Profitt, of Vanceboro; grandchildren, Ricky, Sandy, Christopher, Samantha,

Donnell, Harry T.  

VANCEBORO - Harry T. Donnell, 46, died Thursday, June 18, 2009.
He was a native of Salem, N.J., and worked at PCS Phosphate for more than 27 years until his 
failing health forced him to resign. He was a loving husband and father who loved watching his 
children play sports.

Estelle, Sandra

KINSTON - Ms. Sandra Estelle, 49, of Kinston, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 
7, 2009. She died peacefully at her home, surrounded by her loving sons and family.The
 funeral service will be conducted Wednesday, June 10 at 2 p.m. at Edwards Funeral 
Home, officiated by Calvin Heath. Burial will follow in West View Cemetery, Kinston.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. Sandra was 
born March 23, 1960, in Bristol, Va., to the late Herbert Eugene Blaylock and Nellie E. 
Privette. She moved to Eastern North Carolina with her family in 1966 and has been a 
resident of Kinston since 1998.

Sandra was a very active and creative person, working as a fitness instructor for Galaxy 
Sports. She worked with her sister, Fran, for many years at SanFranSisCo Dancewear and 
Embroidery. In addition, she maintained a home-based business as a graphics artist and 
designer. She loved the beautiful home that she so carefully and artfully decorated. Even 
through the struggle of her illness, her home provided her peace and comfort not only for
 herself, but for those sharing their time with her. Her greatest reward in life was being the 
devoted mother of her four sons and grandmother to nine wonderful grandchildren.

In addition to her father, Sandra was preceded in death by a sister, Sherron Blaylock Jones; 
a granddaughter, Victoria Gaskins; step-father, Delano R. Cox; and father-in-law, Ralph 
Bennett.

She is survived by a large family including: her loving sons, Joseph Gaskins (Marla), 
Steven Gaskins, Kevin Gaskins (Courtney) and Daniel Gaskins (Nina), all of Kinston; 
nine grandchildren, Hayley, Jayden, Dylan, Taylor, Tyra, Ryan, Julia, Logan and Emerson; 
step-daughter, Patsy Longgo of Connecticut; mother and step-father, Nellie and Rex Byrd 
of Sims; brother, Herbert E. Blaylock Jr. (Kim), of Elizabethtown, Pa.; five sisters, Judy 
Kilpatrick and Linda Hopkins (Louis), both of Belhaven, Patsy Howard (Billy) of Goldsboro, 
Gail Garrett (Ronald) of Pantego and Fran McKinney (Wayne) of Kinston; step-brothers, 
Myron Cox and Delaney Cox; mother-in-law, Patricia Bennett; and the faithful father of her 
children, Kenneth A. Gaskins of Vanceboro.

Sandra will be sadly missed by a host of caring friends and many nieces and nephews. 
As a brain tumor patient, Sandra would be pleased that in lieu of flowers, memorial 
contributions be made to any Relay For Life chapter.

Eubanks Sr., Frankie Ray

Frankie Ray Eubanks Sr., born July 23, 1943, in Roanoke Rapids, passed away June 20, 
2009. He was the son of Floyd Eubanks and the late Rosa Eubanks.He was an avid fisherman,
 loved flying, and was a founding charter member of Number Seven Township Rescue Squad. 
He loved God and his family.

He is survived by his wife, Patsy Eubanks; two children, Frankie Ray Eubanks Jr. and wife, 
April, of Trenton and Penny May Ford of Pamlico; three grandchildren, Alyssa Paschal, 
Frankie Ray Eubanks III and Christopher Wayne Eubanks; and his father, Floyd Eubanks 
of Bridgeton, His surviving brother and sisters are Billy Ray Eubanks of Virginia, Rosalee 
Foye of Windsor and Judy White of New Bern. In addition to his mother, he was preceded
 in death by two brothers, Marvin Earl Eubanks and Hardy Ray Eubanks, both of New Bern. 
Frankie came from a large family and there were many nieces, nephews and cousins in the 
local area.

Funeral will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 25, at Calvary Baptist Church in New Bern with 
Pastor Bill Wingard officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. at the church,

KINSTON - James Gooding Jr., 49, of 106 Bright St., Kinston, died Monday, June 22, 2009,

Grishkat Jr., Otto A.

Otto A. Grishkat Jr., 66, MGySGT, USMC (RET), died June 6, 2009, at CarolinaEast Medical 
Center.MGySGT Grishkat was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., the son of the late Otto A. Grishkat Sr. 
and Violet Morgan. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Paul A. 
Grishkat.

He joined the U.S. Marine Corps after graduation from high school and served his country 
honorably for 28 years, retiring in 1987. During his career, he had two tours in Vietnam and for
 more than a year, was a funeral escort for soldiers that were in killed in Vietnam. He loved 
animals of all kinds, especially wildlife.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth Ann "Judy" Coller, and one sister, Leah Grishkat, of Sarasota, 
Fla.

A memorial service with full military honors will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 10, 2009, 
at Cotten Chapel. the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Scott Wilson Hathaway, 47, died Sunday, June 21, 2009, in Myrtle 
Beach, S.C.
He was born June 5, 1962, in Columbia, S.C., a son of Bessie Hyman Hathaway and the 
late Paul Hathaway.

Scott was a graduate of the University of South Carolina in Columbia and was a devoted 
member of the Kappa Alpha Fraternity. Scott was a very outgoing person who was kind, 
considerate and always cared more about people than he did his own feelings. Scott was 
a devoted son and father, and his family gave him great joy. He enjoyed sharing times with 
his friends and loved following Gamecocks Football

Survivors include his mother, Bessie Hyman Hathaway of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; two children, 
Jordan and Wilson Hathaway, both of New Bern; and his aunts, uncles, cousins and his 
extended family.

Hatley, Katherine S. 

Katherine S. Hatley, 87, of New Bern, died June 10, 2009, at Croatan Village.
She attended Pfeiffer College, where she studied writing, which became her passion 
in life. She was a member of Garber United Methodist Church and the Ladies 
Professional Golf Association. She was instrumental in founding the Ladies Golf 
Association at New Bern Golf and Country Club. 

She is preceded in death by her husband, Raymond DeBerry Hatley; two sons, Phil and 
Johnny Hatley; one daughter, Louise Jones; and a grandson, Justin Hatley.

She is survived by her son, Tom Hatley, and wife, Judy, of Greensboro; one daughter, Pamela
 Hatley, of New Bern; two sisters, Merrie Lou Shelley, and husband, Gordon, of Baltimore, 
Md., and Goldwyn Russell of Albemarle; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, June 12, 2009, at Garber United Methodist 
Church, with the Rev. Kent Smith officiating.

Hayden, Ann Williams

GRAHAM - On June 18, 2009, Ann Williams Hayden, 89, of 933 Hanford Road, Graham, 
passed away in Morehead City, N.C.
Born October 29, 1919, she was the wife of the late Lawrence Andrew Hayden and the 
daughter of Charlie V. Williams and Beulah Hughes Williams, both deceased. With her 
strong faith, she was a lifelong member of Eno Presbyterian Church. Known for extensive 
travels and a heartfelt soul, she defined the meaning of a true southern lady. She loved 
gardening, nature and had a strange love for the Atlanta Braves. She was known as a 
dedicated, nurturing, and loyal family member, neighbor and friend. Her love, caring and 
passion will live on through the many lives she touched along the way.

Survivors include a daughter, Lana H. Cieszko and husband, Martin G., of New Bern; a 
granddaughter, Kim S. Temple and husband, Shawn, of Wilmington; a grandson, Regi 
Swicegood of Raleigh; two brothers, Charlie Hughes Williams and wife, Lillian, of Hillsborough,
 and John K. Williams and wife, Daphine, of Burlington; a sister-in-law, Estelle Nelson of 
Prospect Hill; six nieces, Rita Dupont, Maria Perry, Debbie Gordon, Cheryl Charles, Bonita 
Perry and Beth Oakley; and two nephews, Jerry C. Hayden and Michael Williams.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Mattie Lorena Hayden.

The funeral service will be conducted 3 p.m. Sunday, June 21, 2009, at Eno Presbyterian 
Church by the Rev. Chris Grill and Dr. Robert Brizendine. The committal service will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, at the Rich & Thompson Funeral Home 
and Crematory in Graham. At other times, they will be at the residence.

Heath, Elizabeth Lupton

Elizabeth "Beth" Lupton Heath, age 91, died peacefully at CarolinaEast Medical Center on 
Thursday June 25, 2009. 
Elizabeth was a loving daughter of the late Martha Woodard and Joseph Robinson Lupton. 
She was born in Whortonsville, N.C., on Jan 1, 1918. She was preceded in death by her 
husband, James Franklin Heath in 1979, also by her six brothers, Lloyd, Amy, Ben, Hugh, 
Harold and Willie Lupton and two sisters, Ruby Lupton Duell and Gladys Lupton Richert. 
Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, June 29, at Pollock-Best Funeral Chapel . 
Rev. Stephen Fitzgerald will officiate and burial will follow at Greenleaf Memorial Park near 
her home. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at Pollock-Best Funerals & 
Cremations and after the burial at The Family Life Center, Pollock Street section of the First 
Baptist Church. 

Mrs. Heath was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church and attended faithfully until her health 
failed. She worked as manager assistant at McLellan's 5 & 10 in downtown New Bern for 40 plus 
years. She was also a hard working farmer's wife who for many years tended a peach orchard and 
chicken farm in what is now Trent Woods. She loved her flowers, vegetable garden and was a 
wonderful cook. 

Mama, "Gramby", Aunt Beth, is survived by her daughter, Pat Heath Andresen and husband, 
Richard and their two daughters, Debbie A. Lotridge and her husband Neil and their sons, Neil 
Jr. and Cameron and Beverly A. Richards and husband Doneal and their children, Donnie and 
Amber, all of New Bern, NC. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. She will be 
truly missed.

Hill, Ethan James  

Ethan James Hill, age 3? months, died on Friday, June 26, 2009, at CarolinaEast Medical 
Center.
He is survived by his parents, Kevin Cuthrell of New Bern and Amanda A. Hill of Stonewall, 
and his father Kenneth D. Tingen of LaGrange; his sisters Caelyn Tingen of LaGrange and 
Ashley Cuthrell of New Bern; eight grandparents; and three great-grandparents.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Bryant Funeral Home Chapel, Alliance, 
with the Rev. Richard Baldwin officiating. The burial will be in Sandhill cemetery.

Hodges, Doris Marie Lewis  

GRIFTON - Doris Marie Lewis Hodges, 79, of Grifton, died Tuesday, June 9, 2009, at Pitt County
 Memorial Hospital.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 12, 2009, at White Hill Free Will Baptist 
Church, with the Revs. Rays Pearce and Wesley Taylor officiating. Burial will follow in the White 
Hill Cemetery.

She was a member of White Hill Free Will Baptist Church and a homemaker.

Survivors include two daughters, Linda H. Rowe of Grifton and Jo H. Taylor of Aurora,; five 
grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Harold Davis Howard, 60, of New Bern, formerly of Jacksonville, died on Saturday, June
 6, 2009, at CarolinaEast 
Medical Center. He attended Georgetown High School and was previously employed by 
the City of Jacksonville.

Mrs. Dorothy Elizabeth James, 98, died Saturday, June 13, 2009. A native of Hudson 
County, N.J. Dorothy was 
retired from the Jersey Central Railroad. She was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church,

the New Bern Civic Theater, enjoyed painting and playing the piano. She was preceded in

Jones, Bernice M

VANCEBORO - Bernice M. Jones, 74, died Sunday, June 7, 2009.
A graveside service will be conducted Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the Phillips Cemetery 
on Butler Ford Road.

Mrs. Jones, a Craven County native, had been a resident of the Vanceboro community 
all her life. She attended 
Farm Life School and various Pentecostal Holiness churches.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Lee Jones, and three grandchildren.

Jones, Harold R.

Harold R. Jones, 77, died Sunday, June 14, 2009, at CarolinaEast Medical Center.
Born in Farmville, N.C., on August 10, 1931, Harold was the son of the late John and Ora 
Jones. 

He attended New Bern High School and The Citadel. After college, he served his country 
for 23 years in the Army and 
Air Force, and retired from the Army as a CWO-2 in 1974.

He was a Shriner, a member of Centenary United Methodist Church and the Men's Sunday 
school class, and Grantham 
Masonic Lodge. 

His faith, family and friends saw him through many good years. 

He is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Janet L. Jones of New Bern; four daughters, 
Marilyn Jones, Donna Reynolds 
and her husband, John, all of Oxford, Alabama, Rebekah Lewis and her husband Stephen, 
and Holly Dudley and her husband Van, 
all of New Bern.

He was also the beloved Granddaddy and "Opa" to Brandon S. Phillips, Scott Phillips, 
Erica E. Phillips, Samantha R. 
Reynolds, Robert P. Lewis, Danielle L. Lewis, Morgan E. Lewis, Christopher M. Dixon, 
R. Nicholas Dixon and Kailoni R. 
Dixon.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, John Jones, Norma Paul 
and Paul Jones.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Saturday, June 20, 2009, at Cotten

Jordan, Charles Titus  

Charles Titus "Shrimp" Jordan, 41, of 350 Bogue Loop Road in Newport, died on Friday, 
June 26, 2009, at Carteret General Hospital 
in Morehead City.
He was a member of Spring Garden Missionary Baptist Church and a 1985 graduate of 
West Carteret High School. He loved playing 
baseball and was a member of the Swansboro Little League.

He is survived by his parents, Carlton Jordan Sr. and Vonnie Mae Hamm Jordan, both of 
the home; his brother, Carlton Jordan Jr. 
of the home; and his sister, Carletta Anglin of Garner.

His funeral will be held at noon Tuesday, June 30, 2009, in the Spring Garden Missionary 
Baptist Church, with Elder Frederick W. 
Fisher, pastor, officiating. The burial will follow in Seaside M. Memorial Park in Swansboro.

Kessinger, A G 

`"A" "G" Kessinger, Master Chief Petty Officer, USN, Retired, passed away peacefully with 
his family at his side on Tuesday, June 23, 
2009, in Greenville, N.C.
Born August 27, 1925, in Ewing, Texas,"A" "G" served 21 years (from 1943 to 1964) in the 
U.S. Navy aboard numerous Destroyer Escorts 
and Guided Missile ships. During WWII he was aboard the USS Raymond DD341 in the 
Battle of Leyte Gulf, off of Samar Island. Upon 
retirement from the U.S. Navy, he worked 21 years at Vitro Laboratories in Silver Spring, 
Md., and retired in 1985. The family lived 
in Frederick, Md., from 1971 to 1998, where he enjoyed gardening, fishing, hunting and 
remodeling their home. He and his wife, Delorice, 
moved to New Bern, N.C., in September of 1998.

"A" "G" leaves behind his wife of 45 years, Delorice "Dee" Kessinger and a big loving 
family. Daughters, Pat Pyles and husband, James, 
of Buchanan, Ga., Tiawanna Wickersham and husband, Dean, of Houston, Texas, Alicia 
Kessinger-Bader of Atlanta, Ga., Lisa Nesbitt and 
husband, Dale, of DeBary, Fla., Nesha Stone and husband, Greg, of Wilmington, N.C., 
Allison Gosnell and husband, Andrew, of Frederick, 
Md.; sons, Donald Hauser and wife Gaelyn and Alan Kessinger, all of Frederick, Md. He is 
also survived by sixteen grandchildren and 
eight great-grandchildren, and was one of seven brothers and sisters.

Private services will be held at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery.

Center.
She was an active member of Neuse Forest Presbyterian Church, the church Quilting 
Club and Newport Moose Lodge.

La Point, Doris Mary Reuter

Doris Mary Reuter La Point, 91, of New Bern, passed away peacefully on June 17, 2009, in 
her home and is now in God's care.
The second child of Elmer and Helen Reuter, she was a native of Albany, N.Y. After retiring 
from Sears-Roebuck in St. Petersburg, 
Florida, Doris moved to Bedford, Texas, were she lived for 10 years. In 1999, Doris was so 
pleased to settle in the town of River 
Bend.

Her husband, Thomas A. La Point of Albany, N.Y., preceded her in death. Doris is survived 
by one sister, Mary Reuter Hennessy of St. 
Petersburg, Fla.; one son, Thomas D. La Point, and one daughter, Suzanne La Point 
Blackman and her husband, Bob Blackman, of New Bern; 
five grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and four step great-
grandchildren who live throughout the 
United States.

With full respect of our mother's wishes, a private family service will be held at Greenleaf 
Memorial Park with Father Paul Mizener 
officiating.

Leonard III, William Henry

William Henry "Bill" Leonard III died peacefully at CarolinaEast Medical Center on June 12, 
2009, at the age of 83. He was born in 
Salisbury. He graduated from Boyden High School, Salisbury, Georgia Military Academy, 
Atlanta, Ga., and attended N.C. State University, 
Raleigh. Bill entered the U.S. Air Force during World War II and was trained as an 
intelligence officer and served in the Occupation 
Forces in Germany. Bill worked in one of his father's jewelry stores, Leonard's Jeweler's 
of Statesville, for 10 years. In 1958, he 
joined Drexel-Heritage Furniture Manufacturing Co., Inc. In 1960, the family moved to
 Lafayette, Calif., where he was the Northern 
California salesman. He was promoted to Western Regional Sales Manager in 1962. After
 returning to Morganton in 1965, he was hired by 
Kemp Furniture Company, Goldsboro, as vice-president of Sales and Marketing. He was 
associated with Kemp Furniture until the late 1980s, 
when Kemp was purchased by Universal Furniture Inc. Bill was also the past president-
Marketing Division of the Southern Furniture 
Manufacturer's Association. He achieved numerous other accolades during his career in the 
furniture industry. Bill retired in New Bern 
with his wife, Fair, in 1992. 
Bill had a lifetime love of golf with many trophies and honors. His golf swing emulated Sam 
Snead's, his boyhood golf hero. He was active 
in the Episcopal Church in Goldsboro and New Bern. He was a Vestry member, Stephen 
Minister, and did volunteer work as well.

Bill is survived by his wife of 61 years, Fair Miller Leonard. She was his childhood sweetheart 
in Salisbury. Survivors also include a 
brother, Alfred C. Leonard of Lake Norman; and his children, William Wiley Leonard and wife, 
Margaret Ann, of Goldsboro, Mark Christian 
Leonard and wife, Cynthia, of Farmville, Fair Marie Strally and husband, Michael, of Colorado 
Springs, Colo.; grandchildren include Nathan 
Henry Leonard, William Jason Leonard, Alison Leonard Hoyme and husband, Matthew, 
Matthew Starkey Leonard and wife, Joy, Jacob Daniel 
Leonard and Margaret Miller Leonard. 

He was the son of the late William Henry Leonard Jr. and the late Marie White Morgan. 
Preceding him in death was a son, William Henry 
Leonard IV and a grandson, Jacob Wiley Leonard. 

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 17, at Christ Episcopal Church, 
320 Pollock St., New Bern. Inurnment will be in 
the courtyard of Christ Church.

Luehring, Betty June

Betty June Luehring, 78, of New Bern, died June 24, 2009, at CarolinaEast Medical Center.
She was a member of St. Andrew Lutheran Church, a church choir member and served on 
various committees. She was a very caring person, 
an excellent baker, and she loved nature and the ocean. Betty was also a master gardener.

She is survived by her husband Hal Luehring; two sons, Steven Luehring of Rockford, Ill. and
 David Luehring of Herndon, Va.; one daughter, 
Lesley Long of Cherry Valley, Ill.; and four grandchildren, Jennifer, Katie, Alyssa and Braden.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 28, 2009, at St. Andrew Lutheran 
Church with Dr. Ted Rust officiating. The family

McCaffity, Ida Midgette  

VANCEBORO - Ida Midgette McCaffity died Thursday, June 25, 2009, at Carolina East 
Medical Center.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, in the Juniper Chapel Free Will Baptist 
Church with the Rev. Mike Scott officiating. Burial 
will follow in Celestial Memorial Gardens.

She was born in Hyde County, and has been a resident of the Vanceboro community of 
Craven County for more than 70 years. She provided seamstress 
work out of her home for more than 40 years and was a member of Juniper Chapel Free 
Will Baptist Church. 

She is survived by one daughter, Virgnia Lilly of Vanceboro; sister, Edith Lilly of Vanceboro; 
four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

McCain, Madeline Regina Zimmerman

Madeline Regina "Lyn" Zimmerman McCain, 79, of Havelock, died June 13, 2009. She
 was born in Saginaw, Mich., on Dec. 2, 1929.
She graduated from St. Peter and Paul Catholic High School in Saginaw, Mich., in 1949. 
She married her husband Wayne in 1954, who served 30 years 
in the U.S. Marine Corps and retired in 1977, as a Master Gunnery Sgt. in Havelock. 
Wayne is currently employed by Craven Community College as 
Havelock's evening director. The McCains have made their home in Havelock since 1975. 
She has been a Cub Scout volunteer since 1968, where she has 
served as a Den Mother, Den Leader Coach, Unit Commissioner and Director of 30 Cub 
Scout day camps. She currently holds the position of Havelock 
Unit Commission of Cub Scouts. Lyn has served the Annunciation Outreach/Ministerial 
Outreach Program since 1977, giving food to the needy within 
the Havelock-Cherry Point area. She is a member of Annunciation Catholic Church and 
served as a Grand Marshall of the 2005 Havelock Christmas 
Parade. She has received numerous awards including, Governor's Volunteer Award, 
Scouting Silver Beaver and District Award of Merit.

In addition to her husband, Lyn is survived by two sons, Michael W. McCain and wife, 
Glenda, of Corpus Christi, Texas; Patrick E. McCain and wife, 
Hiromi, of New Bern; three grandchildren, Regina, Kenneth and George McCain; and two 
sisters, Anna Marie Ciszewski and Elizabeth Carelli, both of 
Saginaw, Mich.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 18, 2009, at Annunciation Catholic Church, 
followed by burial at Forest Oaks Memorial Gardens. 
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday night at Annunciation.

McCurry Jr., Raymond L.

Raymond L. McCurry Jr., 84 of Cove City, formerly of Morristown, Tenn.; Burnsville, N.C.; 
and Chattanooga, Tenn., died peacefully at his home, 
Wednesday, June 10, 2009. He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Betty Anne 
Smallwood McCurry in October 2007. Raymond was a U.S. Air 
Force veteran of World War II, and was a retired Industrial Engineer with DuPont Corp.
Raymond is survived by his wife, Dorothy Smith McCurry; sister, Doris I. McCurry; children, 
Sharon M. Janisse and husband, Dennis, Craig McCurry 
and wife, Faye, Lise M. Fairweather and husband, Peter; 11 grandchildren; and three 
great-grandchildren.

McDaniels, Linda Josephine  

Linda Josephine McDaniels, 44, of 1326 Hunters Road, died Monday, June 8, 2009, at 
CarolinaEast Medical Center.
She was a 1982 graduate of New Bern High School and obtained an Associate Degree 
in Business at Craven Community College. She was a member of St. 
James AME Zion Church.

The funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 13, 2009, at St. James AME Zion 
Church, with the Rev. Cynthia Smith officiating. Burial will 
be in New Bern Memorial Cemetery.

She is survived by her mother, Velma Foy McDaniel of the home; four brothers, James 
McDaniel, Burgaw, Jonah McDaniel, Durham, Jimmy McDaniel, 
Atlanta, Ga., and Jeremy McDaniel, New Bern; one sister, Lisa Jozette McDaniel of New 
Bern; and maternal grandparents, Joseph and Mattie Foy,

Mary Louise McGinty, 68, of New Bern, died Tuesday, June 23, 2009, at her residence.
Mary Lou was born May 13, 1941, in Mahanoy City, Pa., where she was raised and later 
moved to Pottstown, Pa., where she graduated from high school. 
She began a career with TWA in New York, where she worked for 36 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles McGinty.

She is survived by her loving companion of 27 years, Vito Antonio Raganelli; her brother, 
Charles, and his wife, Andrea Bradley, of Naples, Fla. : 
sisters-in-law, Sheila Bradley of Brighton, Mich., and Miriam Thornbury of Portland, Ore.; 
nephews, Timothy Bradley and wife, Patrice, and Peter 
Bradley and wife, Stephanie, all of Michigan, Michael Bradley and Chris Ann, both of 
Kansas; niece, Mary Beth Marlow and her husband, Gregg, of

JACKSONVILLE - Gene Edward Metts, 67, of Jacksonville, died Saturday, June 27, 2009,
 at his home.
He was the owner and operator of Gene's Tire and Auto, a longtime member of the Piney 
Green Volunteer Fire Department, and a past member of the New 
River Masonic Lodge, the White Shrine, the Scottish Rite and Shriners.

Survivors include his wife, Annette Metts of the home; two sons, Gene Edward Metts Jr. and 
Kevin Alphonso Metts, both of Jacksonville; one daughter, 
Kimberly Nicole Metts of Jacksonville; sisters, Hilda Futrell of Chinquapin, Margaret Smith 
of Delco, and Faye Heath of Durham; brothers, Sidney 
Metts of Pollocksville, Joseph Franklin Metts of New Bern, Nelson Metts of Pollocksville,
 Carlton Metts of New Bern, Ray Metts of Reelsboro, and 
Bruce Metts of New Bern; and three grandchildren.

Mitchell, Elmus  

Elmus "Buddy" Mitchell, 73, died Friday, at CarolinaEast Medical Center.
He worked as a butcher at A & P for 35 years, as well as Piggly-Wiggly and Village 
Butcher Shop. He was a member of New Bern Church of God, where he 
served on the pastor's council and as a Sunday School teacher. He had also been a 
firefighter with Cove City Volunteer Fire Department.

A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Sunday, at New Bern Church of God with David 
Salmons and Pastor Harvey Parrish officiating. The family will 
receive friends at the church from 5 to 6 p.m. Sunday, just prior to the service.

Mitchell is survived by his wife, Earlene Mitchell; two sons, Leonard Earl Mitchell of New 
Bern and Stephen Alan Mitchell of Cove City; one daughter, 
Donna Moran of New Bern; one sister, Jean Burroughs of New Bern; seven grandchildren;

Neary, Joseph John

Joseph John "Joe" Neary, 79, died Wednesday, June 10, 2009, at CarolinaEast 
Medical Center.
Joe was born June 29, 1929, in Rockville Center, New York, the son of the late John 
Henry and Theresea Irene Langer Neary. After graduation from 
high school, he served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, and it 
was during this time that he began his passion for cooking. 
After his honorable discharge, Joe became a master cook and caterer on Long Island 
and catered many large, elegant affairs during his career. His 
passion for work was evident throughout his years of cooking and catering, and carried 
over into his retirement here in New Bern, where he was a 
guard for Tryon Palace and worked at Walmart.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Ruth Heppler Neary; his daughter, Cheryl Anne 
Neary of New Paltz, New York; two sisters, Rose Marie Harrer 
of East Rockaway, Long Island, N.Y., and Ruth Ann Barley of Long Island, New York; 
one granddaughter, Tiffiany Anne Mendez; and two great-grandchildren, 
Jordan Mendez and Jason Mendez.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Monday, June 15, 2009, at Cotten Funeral Home, 
with the Rev. Dr. Ted Rust officiating. Burial, with military 
rites, will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 16, 2009, at Coastal Carolina State Veterans 
Cemetery, Jacksonville, N.C.

Pagano, Mary Ellen

Mary Ellen Pagano went to be with our Lord on June 23, 2009, as she was surrounded by 
special friends and family. 
Mary Ellen is survived by two sons, Elliot A. Pagano and Joseph J. Pagano; two sisters, 
JoAnne K. Pearson and Alice "Robbie" Lovelace; and an uncle, 
Joe C. Garner. She will also be missed by special childhood friends, Janet, Georgia, Peggy

Pate, Enos Obed

Enos Obed Pate, 92, went to be with his Lord and Savior on June 25, 2009. He was the son 
of the late John Caswell and Neppie Ipock Pate. He was 
predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Dorothy Powell Pate, former Clerk of Craven County. 
He was also predeceased by a sister, Elizabeth P. Boyette 
and son-in-law, James C. Williams, III.
Mr. Pate served Craven County as a former Constable of #8 Township, serving three terms 
until this office was done away with. He then became jailer 
of the Craven County Jail. Mr. Pate was appointed Deputy Sheriff by Sheriff Charles Berry 
and retired as Chief Deputy Sheriff under Sheriff Bruce 
Edwards after 30 years in law enforcement. Mr. Pate was affiliated with Doric Lodge, York 
Rite and Shrines. He was a member of St. Mary's Free Will 
Baptist Church. He was a recipient of the 75-year Lilly for Life Diabetic Award.

Survivors include a daughter, Carolyn P. Williams of Franklin, Va.; three grandchildren, Lisa 
W. Hagerty and husband, John, of Powhatan, Va., Susan 
W. Osborne and husband, Scott, of Midlothian, Va. and James C. Williams IV of New Bern; 
three great-grandchildren, Whitney Davis Kee, Tyler Wade Kee, 
and Ryan Scott Osborne; one brother John R. Pate and wife, Maxine; one sister, Viola P. 
McCoy; and three nieces.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 28, 2009, in the chapel of Cotten 
Funeral Home, New Bern. Burial will follow in Greenleaf 
Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at 1 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral

Paul III, Edward Wallace

Edward Wallace Paul III, 63 of 215 Popular Drive, Elizabeth City, died Friday, June 19, 2009, 
at Sentara Norfolk Hospital.
Paul, a native of Craven County, was the son of the late Edward Wallace Paul Jr., and Norma 
Jones Paul. He was a retired aviation foreman in electronics 
at AR&SC at the U.S. Coastal Guard Base, a member and Past Master of the Eureka Lodge 
317 AF & AM, and a member of Newbegun United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Christine Joerg Paul, and a sister, Marsha Paul Reel, of New Bern. 

A memorial service will be Saturday, June 27, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Newbegun United Methodist 
Church with the Rev. Roger Braun officiating. The family will

Peckham III, Charles Daniel

Charles Daniel Peckham III, 76, of New Bern, died June 10, 2009, at UNC Memorial Hospital.
He served his country in the U.S. Army and was active with Big Brothers and Big Sisters in 
New Bern. Charles was a teacher and administrator for 26 years 
at Blackstone Valley Regional Vocational Technical High School. He was an instructor and 
trainer for the safety program with AARP and the Treasurer of 
the Greens Association at Carolina Pines. He was a member of Solomon's Temple Masonic 
Lodge in Uxbridge, Mass. He is preceded in death by his sister, 
Barbara Woodward.

He is survived by his wife, Helen; two sons, Robert Peckham and wife, Sandra, of Uxbridge, 
Mass., and C. Darren Peckham and wife, Cheryl, of Northbridge, 
Mass.; four grandchildren, Heather, Ashley, Matthew and Taylor; and one great-grandson, 
Jaren.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 20, 2009, at Cotten Chapel, 
with the Rev. Eddy Gabbert officiating.

Curtis Earl Peterson, 61, of 6090 E. Dawson Road in Grifton, died Wednesday, June 24, 
2009. He was born and raised in Pitt County and was a farmer.

Rardon, Myrtle Moore 

Myrtle Moore Rardon lived 92 years on her own terms as a Southern lady, well traveled 
throughout the world and across the United States. Myrtle was fond 
of homestyle cooking, politics, pets and all animals, and especially family. Her strong will 
and determination guided and supported her friends and family. 
She will be dearly missed. 
Mrs. Rardon was a native of Edgecombe County but a longtime resident of Craven County, 
and a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church, where she was 
very active until her later years. She was a member of the Republican Women's Club, New 
Bern Garden Club, Christian Women's Club and a Daughter of the 
American Revolution.

She was the daughter of the late David Ashley and Martha Long Moore, and was preceded in 
death by her husband of more than 60 years, Jack R. Rardon.

She is survived by her son, John Rardon, and his wife, Terry, of Florence, S.C.; three sisters, 
Doris Ashley M. Smith, and Mattie Long Peterson, both 
of New Bern, and Kathleen Moore of Wilson; and a grandson, Matthew Ryan Rardon of 
Clemson, S.C.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8 p.m. Monday at Cotten Funeral Home. 
Funeral services will be on Tuesday, June 9, 2009, at 11a.m. at 
First Presbyterian Church, with Ken Gruebel, CLP, officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar

Dolly P. Shipley, died Wednesday, June 17, 2009, at CarolinaEast Medical Center.

Sparrow, Mary Elizabeth Carter  

HAVELOCK - Mary Elizabeth Carter Sparrow, 86, of 730 Temples Point Road, died 
Sunday, June 14, 2009, at CarolinaEast Medical Center.
She was a native of the Harlowe Community and a lifetime member of Piney Grove 
A.M.E. Zion Church.

Her church activities included serving as Class Leader No. 1 and Senior Choir Member, 
and she was a participant of the Harlowe Senior Citizens Program.

Her funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, June 18, 2009, at Piney Grove A.M.E. Zion 
Church, with the Rev. Robert Little officiating. Burial will be in 
Piney Grove Church Cemetery.

She is survived by her son, Winford Lee Carter of Washington, D.C.; one grandchild; 
and one great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Viewings will be at held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday at Oscar's Mortuary and 
at the church one hour prior to the service Thursday.

Thomas, Lee Vernon  

Lee Vernon Thomas, 81, of New Bern, died June 12, 2009, at CarolinaEast Medical Center.
He is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and he proudly served 
his country for 22 years in the U.S. Army.

He is survived by his wife, Nina Marie Thomas; one son, Robert Lee Thomas of Blackfoot, 
Idaho; one daughter, Elaine T. Jones of Dover; his stepson, 
Marvin Haddock; and stepdaughter, Loretta Snyder, both of New Bern; his brother, 
Horace Thomas of Ayden; five sisters, Autry Shavender of Bath, 
Demetris Cumbo of Jacksonville, Vern Stern of St. George, Utah, Marilyn Bond and 
Verdie Taggart, both of Provo, Utah; 12 grandchildren; and seven 
great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 15, 2009, at Cotten Chapel, followed by 
burial with military honors at New Bern Memorial Cemetery.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Tune, Elnora Ann  

COVE CITY - Elnora Ann Tune, 63, of 440 Cicero Riggs Road, died Sunday, June 21, 
2009, at CarolinaEast Medical Center.
She was a member of The Undenominational Pentecostal Holiness Church of Cove City 
and served as an usher and youth coordinator. She was employed as a 
developmental technician at Howell's Center.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, June 26, 2009, at the UPHC of Cove City, 
with the Rev. Francis Cruell and the Rev. Kelvin Brown 
officiating. Burial will be in White Cemetery.

She is survived by her three sons, John Tune of Kentucky, Mark Tune of Fayetteville and 
Leornado Tune of the home; two daughters, Alexis Tune of Upper 
Marlboro, Md., and Bernadette Hargett of Fort Lee, Va.; four brothers, Richard Tune, George 
Studman and Willie Studman, all of Cove City, and James 
Studman of Columbus, Ga.; six sisters, Alberta Tune of Manhattan, N.Y., Sally Strayhorn, 
Betty Fulmore, Sophie Mintx, Susan B. Brown and Arnella Hargett, 
all of Cove City; and nine grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the residence of Rosa Brown, 442 Cicero Riggs Road, 
Cove City.

Viewing will be from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday at Oscar's Mortuary and at the church 
Friday one hour prior to the service.

Van Dermark Jr., Jonathan Gay "Jack"

CHARLOTTE - Jonathan "Jack" Gay Van Dermark Jr., 73, of Pineville, died Monday, June 
22, 2009, at Carolinas Medical Center, Main.
His family will receive friends from 6 until 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 26, at McEwen Funeral 
Service, Mint Hill Chapel, 7428 Matthews-Mint Hill Road. Private 
interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery, Cincinnati, Ohio.

Mr. Van Dermark was born August 10, 1935, in Cincinnati, a son of the late Dr. Jonathan 
G. Van Dermark Sr. and Margaret Morrow Van Dermark. He served with 
the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Mr. Van Dermark worked in the human relations 
field for 39 years and retired from CIT Financial Group.

He is survived by his wife, Judith Ann Van Dermark; three children, Dr. Jonathan G. Van 
Dermark III and his wife, Minette, of Norfolk, Va., Dr. Jeffrey Van 
Dermark and his wife, Lynn, of Dallas, Texas, and Jenifer Holland and her husband, Eddie, 
of Mint Hill; a brother, Thomas Van Dermark and his wife, 
Barbara, of Somerset, Ky.; and eight grandchildren, Nathan, Katie and Sam Van Dermark,
 Noah, Isabel and Jacob Van Dermark, and Evan and Jack Holland.

Von Squires Sr., Joseph  

Bishop Joseph Von Squires, Sr., 60, of 190 Askins Brick Road, Ernul, died Tuesday, June 
16, 2009, at CarolinaEast Medical Center.
He was a native of the Maribel Community of Pamlico County and a graduate of Pamlico 
Central High School. He served in the United States Marine Corps in 
Vietnam and received the Purple Heart. His employment record included Supervisor at Texfi 
Industries, Building Inspector for Craven County and later the 
Chief Building Inspector for Craven County becoming the first African-American to hold the 
position. He received the call into the ministry in 1976 under 
the leadership of the late Bishop Willie Grant Sr. and began ministering at St. Peter Baptist 
Church of Aurora in 1985, and in 1986 he became youth speaker 
and pastor. He was appointed Bishop in the Pentecostal Holiness Church in 1995 and pastor 
of UPHC of Cove City.

His funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 21, 2009, at Grover C. Fields Middle 
School with the Rev. Gary Williams and the Rev. Jessie L. 
Williams officiating. Burial will be in New Bern Memorial Cemetery with military honors.

He is survived by his wife, Beatrice K. Squires of the home; four sons, Joe V. Squires Jr. of 
Concord, Barry Squires, Jeffery Squires and Jeremy Squires, 
all of Raleigh; nine grandchildren; his mother, Perrelia Squires Parker of Maribel; five brothers, 
Bobby Squires of New Bern, Gregory Squires of Winston-
Salem, Calvin Parker of Savannah, Ga, Gerald Parker of New Bern, and Reginald Parker of 
Bayboro; and one sister, Wanda Dawson of Kinston.

Viewing will be at from 3 to 6 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, at Oscar's Mortuary.

Walston, Jacqueline Bryant  

COVE CITY - Jacqueline Bryant Walston, 67, of 112650 U.S. 70 West, died Sunday, June 
21, 2009, at CarolinaEast Medical Center.
A native of Craven County, she was a member of Bryant Chapel AME Zion Church, serving 
as deaconess, class leader, senior choir member and Christian 
Education teacher. She graduated from St. Augustine's College and East Carolina University. 
As an educator in the Craven County school system, she 
taught at Central School, Trent Park, Bangert, and James W. Smith.

A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, at Bryant Chapel AME Zion Church in Cove City, 
with the Rev. B.T. Cornelius officiating. Burial will be in 
the Bryant Chapel Church Cemetery.

She is survived by her husband, Alonzo Walston Sr. of the home; one son, Alonzo Walston 
Jr. of Cove City; two daughters, Nanette Walston of Winterville 
and Karol Walston of Cove City; two sisters, Janie Spellman of New Bern and Alcester Harris 
of Garner; and five grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

White, Clifton Bryan

KINSTON - Clifton Bryan White passed away on Wednesday, June 24, 2009. Clifton was a 
devoted school teacher/Driver's Ed teacher for Brunswick County. He served in the U.S. 
Army Reserve for 6 years, was a past Eucharist Lay Reader at St. Phillips Episcopal 
Church, past president of the NC Fourth of July Festival, past master of Pythagoras 
Masonic Lodge #249 in Southport, past Stroud Strother Sunday school teacher at First
 Baptist Church in Kinston and many other civic organizations.
Clifton's most recent passions were building birdhouses and beading.

He was preceded in death by his father, Willis Wayne White and mother, Lauren DeBruhl 
White and his first wife, Judith Young White.

Survivors include his wife, Margie C. White of Kinston; daughter, Frances W. "Fran" Jessup 
and husband, Ross, of Boiling Spring Lakes; stepdaughter, Donna Stroud and husband, Wilson, 
of Zebulon; sister, Gwen Smith and husband, James, of Kinston; grandchildren, Garrett Swain 
and Bryan Swain of Southport; and step-grandchildren, Aaron Stroud, Isaac Stroud of Zebulon 
and Jon-Paul Jessup of Boiling Spring Lakes; sister, Gwendolyn Smith and husband James; 
half-sisters, Gloria Schimmel and husband Charles, and Ann Blake and husband Keith; 
half-brothers, John White and wife Katherine, and Willis Earl White and wife Judy. 

The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. June 26, 2009, at First Baptist Church and 
at other times at the home. Funeral services will be 
held at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church with Dr. Chuck Lowery and the Rev. Justin Combs 
officiating. 

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 27, 2009, at Northwood Cemetery 
in Southport with Father Barry Kubler. 

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be made to First Baptist Church, 
Audio/Video Dept, 2600 Rouse Road, Kinston, NC 28504 and 
Kitty Askins Hospice Center, 107 Hadley Park Court, Goldsboro, NC.

Winstead Jr., Floyd Lawrence  

Floyd Lawrence Winstead Jr., 49, of 1233 Lisbon Bridge Road, died Wednesday, June 10, 
2009, at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville. Services 
will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday evening, June 12, 2009, from the chapel of Garner Funeral 
Home, with Pastor Mike Pridgen and Pastor David Lewis 
officiating.
Interment services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 13, 2009, at the Cove City Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Phyllis N. Winstead of the home; his parents, Floyd and Bonnie 
Winstead of Dover; his sister, Deborah, of Ashbury; and his 
brothers, Richard Winstead of Rocky Mount and Stephen Winstead of Greenville.

The family will receive friends immediately following the funeral service on Friday evening at 
the funeral home and other times at his home or his 
parents, 418 West Burl Street, Dover.

Wood, William

William "Bill" Wood of New Bern passed away at his residence Thursday, June 11, 2009. 
Bill was president of R.J. Foods Inc. He graduated from Michigan 
State University in 1964 with a BA in Marketing. His parents, John Allen Wood and Winifred 
Ackers Wood, and brother, John Anthony Wood preceded Bill in 
death.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday June 15, 2009, at Edwards Funeral Home, 
with the Rev. Rick Vernon and Father Paul Mizner officiating, with 
burial to follow in Pinelawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. 
Sunday evening at Edwards Funeral Home. 

Survivors include his wife, Rita Johnson Wood of the home; son, Clinton Bruce Wood of 
New Bern; daughter, Elizabeth Whitney Devaney of Aurora, Ill.; and 
granddaughter, Aja Darlena Devaney.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Rick Gorman and staff of New Bern Cancer Care as well 
as Craven County Hospice for the excellent care Bill received during 
his illness.
