Published in the Sun Journal from 3/4/2009 - 3/7/2009 Coggin, Alice Bostian Alice Bostian Coggin, 86, formerly of Charlotte, went on to be with our Lord on Friday, February 27, 2009. Born in Hamlet to Frank and Lillian Bostian, Alice lived the last years of her life at Lincoln Nursing Center where she passed away. Alice's life was devoted to and driven by three primary passions. The first was her love for our Lord and her walk with Him. This manifested itself in her willingness to share her faith and its meaningful depth. The second was her love for her family. Its manifestations include her faithful service in ministry with her late husband, the Rev. Elwood Coggin, and her loving support of her immediate and extended family. The driving force behind her husband's success as a composer was Alice's insistence that he share his works with others and the confidence she demonstrated in the gift God had given him. The third was an incessant desire to help oth-ers and bring out the best in them. This showed itself in the innumerable people well beyond her family who loved her. The main thing that made Alice Coggin special stands as a testimony to others. Being a Christian was not something that Alice was. Rather, being a Christian was who Alice was and defined her very identity. As a result, her life was a natural outflow of the Lord's work through an individual and her effect on others, by letting God use her was seen consistently throughout her life. Alice's life saw many accomplishments but every one of them came about because of Al-ice's faith in our Lord and who she was. Perhaps more important are the countless accom-plishments of others that came after the encouragement Alice gave them. Alice is survived by her sisters Geneva Thrower of Rockingham, Helen Hall of Wilmington, Del., and Edna Wheeler of Hamlet; her children and their spouses, Helen and Howard Mathews of New Bern, Emily and Earl Gulledge of Charlotte, Anita and Don Peach of Lincolnton and Woody and Brenda Coggin of Concord; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was born in Marathon, Fla., to Thomas Austin and Carol Sadler Voliva on July 22, 1962. Christy's first few years of life were filled with sunshine, sand and water. Raised on Goose Creek Island, in the Hobucken and Lowland communities, further endeared her to a life on the water and a lasting relationship with the commercial fishing industry and those involved in it. In her young adult years, Christy's love and knowledge of the commercial seafood industry took her to the southernmost point of the United States-Key West, Fla., where she chose to make her home, and then on to Freeport, Texas, for several years. Her career path took her up and down the Southeastern Seaboard, but her family ties eventually brought her back home to settle. Always ready and willing to rally for the underdog, Christy built many long and lasting friendships based on that concept. She gave freely to those in need whenever possible, whether monetary, a meal, a place to rest, a shoulder or an ear. That was her nature.
