Harmatuk, Peter J.

Peter J. Harmatuk, Amateur Paleontologist, Mayor, Firefighter, Husband, Grandpa and
Friend
Peter James Harmatuk, 88, a retired plant manager for Georgia Pacific and noted amateur
paleontologist, died of complication from Parkinson Disease, May 5, at Two Rivers Nursing
Home in New Bern.

Mr. Harmatuk was a Syracuse, New York native who in 1942 relocated to Edenton,
North Carolina to construct the Marine Corps Air Station in Edenton, North Carolina
in support of the ongoing war effort. Upon the completion of the air station, he founded
a logging company and began to harvest the abundant hardwoods located in the area
in order to supply the local veneer businesses and eventually became a veneer mill
plant manager in Edenton where he stayed until 1955 when he accepted the position of
plant manager for Craven Log and Veneer (later to become American Timber Products a
division of Georgia-Pacific) in Bridgeton, North Carolina where he stayed until he retired
at the age of 55 in 1975.

A "Transplanted Yankee," "Mr. Pete," as he was fondly called, fell in love with his new
home on the water and sought ways to improve the lives of his family and his new
friends. He became a founding member of the Bridgeton Volunteer Fire Department in
1958 and eventually became its Chief in 1971. Seeking even greater community
involvement, he served on the Board of Aldermen for the town from 1959 to 1982. He
was elected Mayor of the Town of Bridgeton in 1982 and served as such until 1995
when he chose to retire from this office to pursue a greater love, the hunt for fossils.
It was during his administration that Bridgeton formed a police department to provide
protection to the residents and built a city water and sewage facility and established
a program of garbage collection.

"Mr. Pete" established Boy Scout Troop 442 along with a Babe Ruth Baseball team to
provide opportunities for the young children in the town where he served with Charles
Duffy as its scout masters and coached the baseball team. Additionally, "Mr. Pete"
throughout the years not only supported his grandchildren in the pursuit of sports but
significantly influenced his many grandchildren in developing a deep love of music and
the arts, many of whom still pursue that love today.

As a member of St Paul Catholic Church in New Bern, Mr. Harmatuk coached the St
Paul's church league baseball team and provided upkeep, renovation and maintenance
to the historic church buildings. On April 26, 2009, he was awarded the Director's
Award of Accomplishment from New Bern Suzuki Strings.

"Mr. Pete" will long be recognized most for his contributions to understanding of the
faunas of fossil vertebrates of Eastern North Carolina that were virtually unknown until,
quite by accident, one of his sons found a shark's tooth in their driveway in the fall of
1963. His relentless pursuit to discover "where the tooth came from" eventually led to
what was described by Dr. Clayton Ray, of the Department of Paleobiology for the
National Museum of National History of the Smithsonian Institution as an "intensive
and continuing relationship." This relationship continued through the years and was
culminated on October 11, 1985, when Mr. Harmatuk was honored by the Director of
the Smithsonian with the award of the Director's Medal at a reception for the unveiling
of an exhibit called "Sharks." This exhibit, that consists entirely of materials founded
by "Mr.Pete" and provided by him to the museum. This exhibit has toured the world as
part of the Smithsonian's 100th anniversary tour and is presently displayed in prominence
in the newly renovated gallery of the Natural History Museum. In 1993,
"Mr. Pete" was awarded the Harrell L. Strimple Award for his significant contributions
to the science of paleontology. When making the presentation, the Smithsonian
presenter, Dr. Clayton Ray, said:

"His fame will continue justifiably to grow as more and more is published on his collection.
most notably the vertebrate volumes on Lee Creek now in publication. When published,
it will transform the vertebrate fauna of the Yorktown Formation from virtual terra incognita
to perhaps the most speciose vertebrate paleofauna in the world, in large part through
Pete's collecting prowess."

In 1977, Mr. Harmatuk was a co-founder of the North Carolina Fossil Club which was
targeted toward benefiting research collections and offered student financial aid to those
who wished to pursue a career in fossils. This eventually led to the founding of the
Aurora Fossil Museum, in 1976, as a non-profit fossil education resource center. The
museum's mission is to increase knowledge of the geology and paleontology of the
coastal plains of North Carolina and the local Lee Creek mine.

In the course of thousands of days at the Lee Creek Mine, to say nothing of the
numerous other localities in eastern North and South Carolina, "Mr. Pete" collected
with unflagging enthusiasm more fossils of more kind for science than anyone who has
ever worked the middle of Atlantic Coastal Plain. In many cases he was the first to bring
a locality to the attention of paleontologists, to influence other collectors toward a
scientific orientation, to reorganize an unusual stratigraphic occurrence, or to discover
specimens unprecedented in kind, quantity, or quality. More than once, "Mr. Pete's"
forced others to pay attention at length to something of interest previously brushed aside.
His rare combination of self-effacing humility and constitutional inability to accept the
glib answers based on faulty reasoning from vested authority made association with him
a source of continuing satisfaction. If one ever needed a reminder that paleontology
traditionally has and remains largely a field science, the enjoyment and advancement of
which is open to Everyman to the extent of their ability, effort and
interest, Pete Harmatuk provided irrefutable proof. With little of the externally conferred
advantages of education, opportunity, and funding, his contributions demonstrated that
there is no substitute for innate intellect and good character.

Association with "Mr. Pete" has been compared to one of life's rare pleasures had he
never collected a fossil.

Mr. Harmatuk was preceded in death in 2003 by his wife of 61 years, Mary Bagan
Harmatuk, also of Syracuse New York; Mr. Harmatuk's survivors include four children,
Patricia Harmatuk Baker and William Paul Harmatuk, both of New Bern, Peter J
Harmatuk, Jr. of Oakton, Virginia, and Christopher Harmatuk of Anniston, AL; a
sister, Dr. Frances Harmatuk; 7 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

Funeral service for Mr. Harmatuk will be 11 a.m. Friday at St. Paul Catholic Church
with Father Paul Mizener officiating. He will be laid to rest next to his wife in St.
Joseph Cemetery immediately following the funeral service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to your favorite charity or to the Aurora
Fossil Museum, P.O. Box 352, Aurora, NC 27806.

Rising, Mary S

Mary S. Rising, who died peacefully at home at age 81 on May 9, 2009, was a mother,
grandmother, friend, travel companion and lover of life who gave freely of her love and
friendship to all that touched her life. Mary was born on Aug. 16, 1927, in Timmins,
Ontario, the seventh of nine children of Hugo and Matilda Shaw and a welcomed sister
to Opal after the birth of five older brothers. One brother, Merlin, and her youngest sister,
Patricia ("Baby" as she is still known to family) survive her passing.
Foreshadowing the many moves she would make in her life, Mary moved to upstate New
York in early adulthood. Her love of children led her to the Speno family to care for their
younger children and with whom she became lifelong friends. Always adventuresome and
with a yen to travel, she became a flight attendant (then known as a stewardess) in the
late 1940s on Robinson Airlines and thereafter never felt shy about offering her advice
(too often with her children in tow) on how airlines could improve their in-flight service.
The1950s brought on marriage to Donald Rising, a move to Kansas City, Mo., and the
birth of their first son, Jay "Bruce." Ten years and three states later, the family was
complete with a child born at each stop; Virginia in Des Moines, Sean in New Orleans
and Christopher in Albuquerque. While the family was complete, the moves continued
with stops in Michigan, Wisconsin, New Jersey, Florida and finally New Bern, N.C. Each
stop produced more lifetime friends and culminated in the community of love and support
she found and cherished in New Bern.

Known to all her friends were her children, their spouses and partners, and most significantly
her grandchildren, Justin, Jordan, Andrew, Caroline, Haley, and Ben. Mary could always be
counted upon to be the connective tissue in the lives of her children, motivating and driving
each to success with reminders of how well their siblings were doing and allowing each to
be updated on the lives of the others on her phone tab. Her most precious possessions were,
however, her grandchildren. With each she shared special times, enriching their lives with
stories their parents wished she had forgotten and forming unique bonds none will forget.

She attracted friends of uncommon generosity that cared for her through her last days,
each more comfortable with what they could do for each other than themselves. To know
Mary was the gift she gave to us in perpetuity.

A memorial service will be held for Mary Rising at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 18, 2009, at
Trinity Methodist Church at 2311 Elizabeth Ave, New Bern, N.C. A luncheon will be hosted
by Trinity Methodist Church immediately following the service.
