Keith, a principal inventor of the three-way catalytic converter, died on November 9, at Craven Regional Medical Center in New Bern, North Carolina. He was 88 and resided in Marco Island, Florida. Dr. Keith began his career as a research chemist at Sinclair Oil in 1943. He joined Engelhard Corporation in 1957 and continued his employment until his 1985 retirement as executive vice president of Engelhard Industries. Dr. Keith received over 200 patents during his career, most notable being the invention of the catalytic converter which was first introduced on series- production automobiles in the U.S. market in 1975 in order to meet the requirements of the U.S. Clean Air Act of 1970. In 2003, Dr. Keith and his lifelong friend and colleague, John J. Mooney, were awarded the National Medal of Technology and Innovation for their invention, application to automobiles, and commercialization of the catalytic converter. Dr. Keith was also the recipient of numerous other awards, including the Walter Ahlstrom Prize, which is awarded for engineering achievements that have led to important benefits in industry and to the well-being of society. The catalytic converter is recognized by the Society of Automotive Engineers as one of the 10 most important inventions in the history of the automobile. Since its commercialization in 1975, the converter has eliminated an estimated 3 billion tons of hydrocarbons, oxides of nitrogen and over 30 billion tons of carbon monoxide from the atmosphere. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reported to Congress in 1997 that the converter cut national nitrogen oxide emissions by 30 percent, volatile hydrocarbons by 45 percent and carbon monoxide emissions by 50 percent between 1970 and 1990. The EPA report noted that those reductions were achieved during a period when the nation's population grew by 22.3 percent, the national economy grew by 70 percent and the number of vehicle miles traveled by American motorists increased 120 percent. The agency's report concluded that the converter helped save 100,000 lives and prevented hundreds of thousands of occurrences of a variety of respiratory ailments. The converter also has helped eliminate atmospheric lead, an air pollutant that is known to negatively affect the mental health of children. Dr. Keith was born in 1920 at Steward Creek in Ritchie County, W.V. Dr. Keith's wife, Edith, also of Ritchie County, W.Va., died in December of 2000. His survivors include his two daughters, Carla K. Arrangements by Cotten Funeral Home Published in the Sun Journal from 11/29/2008 - 12/2/2008 Biggerstaff, Sally Peters Sally Peters Biggerstaff of New Bern passed away Friday, Nov. 28, 2008. Mrs. Biggerstaff was born March 12, 1918, in Clark County, Ky. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cleveland Biggerstaff Jr., of Lexington, Ky. Her parents were John Miller and Alice Givens Peters. Sally and husband, Cleve, were farmers at the beginning of their marriage, eventually raising hemp for rope for the Defense Department during World War II in central Kentucky. After the war, they moved to Lexington and bought a restaurant they named The Rosebud after a famous Kentucky Derby winner. It became well-known for her cooking during the '50s and '60s until Cleve died. Sally remained in food service, working for Transylvania University for many years and managing a Winchester, Ky., restaurant, "The Old South," for her family until she eventually retired and moved to New Bern. Retirement didn't last long; she started working for Sara Pocket Tea Room in New Bern and, when it closed, she began working for the Hampton Inn as a breakfast hostess, where she worked until age 86. Sally has many good friends and relatives who will always remember her joy of living and love of family. She had a lifelong skill as a chef. As a legacy to her family, Sally had a memory-evoking collection of recipes published in a cookbook for her family as gifts for a family reunion at Atlantic Beach in 2008 when her 90th birthday was celebrated. Sally Biggerstaff had many interests in life, including children, grandchildren, sharing a meal she prepared and gardening. Often found in her yard by visitors, she claimed she moved to New Bern because "if the camellias could bloom all year here, so could she." She is survived by two daughters, Patricia Bartram and husband, Bob Bartram, of New Bern and Deanie Cinnamon of Lexington, Ky; blessed with six grandchildren, Christopher Bartram and wife, Catherine, of Springfield, Va., Kevin Bartram and wife, Connie, of Fredericksburg, Va., Michele Bartram of Chicago, Ill., Jerry Scott Cinnamon and wife, Kitty, of Lexington, Ky., Julie Ann McFarland and husband, Jimmy, of Lexington, Ky., and Jennifer Cinnamon of Lexington, Ky. She has six great-grandchildren that she claimed made her old age absolutely wonderful: Jordan and Jenna McFarland, Jonathan Cinnamon and Meghan Minniear, Nicholas and William Bartram. A small prayer service will be held at Cotten Funeral Home and Crematory on Monday at 5 p.m. A memorial service will be held in Lexington, Ky., at the Crossroads Christian Church, 4128 Todds Road on Saturday at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, Sally would prefer friends spend their money on gifts for needy children, such as the Greenbrier Fund for Needy Children or the MERCI Clinic of New Bern. Their mailing addresses are: MERCI Free Clinic, 1315 Tatum Drive New Bern, N.C. 28560; Greenbrier Fund for Needy Children, 101 Oak Hill Lane, New Bern, N.C. 28562.
