Kane, Eric L.

Eric Lobb Kane, 67, went to meet our Lord on Aug. 30, 2008.?
Mr. Kane was born in Media, Pa., on March 23, 1941. New Bern became his home in 1978.
Eric was a humble man who would never boast about himself, so it is our great honor to let the
world know how wonderful he was. Among his many contributions to his community, he was a
member and deacon of Temple Baptist Church as well as a teacher of the Sunday School Joy
Class.? Serving for years as a substance-abuse counselor, Eric also helped to initiate Celebrate
Recovery.? He spent countless hours as a volunteer and coach for the Special Olympics with his
son, Jeremy. A member of the U.S. Marine Corps, he proudly served our country for 23 years.
It could be said that Eric Kane was a soldier of love.?
Armed with a seemingly endless flow of compassion, empathy and faith in God, he was a
motivational inspiration to all who crossed his path. Having never met a stranger, it was one of
his greatest pleasures to help people find and sustain their own light through his shining example
and amazing talent for making people feel special. You could always count on hearing his gentle
encouragements like, 'One day at a time,' or 'Be good to you.'
When he wasn't working on some angelic mission or another, you might find him working on a
computer, reading science fiction, riding his motorcycle or sailing a boat.
Let it be known that whether it was his biological, adopted, foster or stepchild, he loved all of his
children and grandchildren deeply and unconditionally. Words cannot express how dearly loved
he was or how greatly he will be missed.
Mr. Kane is survived by his beloved wife of 18 years, Pamela E. Kane, of New Bern; four sons,
Benjamin Kane, and his wife, Lena Primina, of Morehead City, Jeremy Kane, Charles Kane, and
his wife, Michelle, all of New Bern and Charles Bandy, and his wife, Denise, of Union, Ky.; a
daughter, Bronwyn Mithun and her husband, John, of Locust Grove, Va.; his stepsons, Jordan
Brown and his wife, Danielle, of West Jefferson, Justin Brown and Joshua Brown, of New Bern
and his daughter-in-law, Beth Brown, of New Bern; one brother, Richard Kane of Danielsville, Pa.;
one sister, Dale Laughlin of Media, Pa. and 21 grandchildren.?
The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2008 at Cotten Funeral
Home and Crematory.
Memorial services are Thursday, Sept. 4, 2008 at 3 p.m. at Temple Baptist Church with the Rev.
Dr. Steve Cobb officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Jones County Special Olympics.
Cotten Funeral Home and Crematory is serving the Kane Family.

Flanagan, Elaine Englett

September 3, 1965 ? September 11, 2008
Sadly on September 11, 2008, we lost our very dear Elaine.
Elaine is survived by her husband, Chris, and her sons, Ben and Ryan, all of Wilmington;
her mother, Ginger, of New Bern; her sisters, Brenda, Vicki and Debbie, and brother-in-law,
Chris; her nephews, Jake and Michael, and her niece, Allison. She is also survived by her
husband's family including his father, Larry; sisters and brothers, LeeAnne, Kathy, Jeannie,
Eileen, Jim, Rob and George and many, many wonderful nieces and nephews. Elaine was
preceded in her death by her father, Glenn, and her mother-in-law, Jean. Elaine has numerous
friends and colleagues and we know she holds a special place in each of your hearts. We
were each blessed to have her in our lives.
Elaine was born on September 3, 1965, at Cherry Point Naval Hospital. She traveled and lived
in many different states until her military family arrived and retired in eastern North Carolina.
Elaine was one of four daughters, and by far, the entertainer of the group.
Elaine graduated from Havelock High School in 1983 and received her bachelor's of education
degree from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. She first taught in the Craven County
school system, followed by the Florida school system, and for the past twelve years in the New
Hanover County school system at Wrightsboro Elementary School, where she and Chris settled
and currently live.
Elaine loved to be around people and she had the kindest soul and a sense of humor that
matched no other, which is evident by the abundant amount of friends she has.
Elaine had many loves, from teaching, to helping those in need, to a love of nature, animals, and
the ocean, but she most loved her husband and children and her family and friends. Whenever
she entered the room, we knew laughter was imminent. She made everyone feel special and loved.
We love her dearly, even though we sisters know she was our mother's favorite daughter. We will
miss her until we meet again, but will hold her spirit with us forever. Thank you, Elaine, for all you
have given and taught us. We are so proud of you.
Services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, September 14, 2008, at Cotten Funeral Home.
Visitation will be from 2 to 3:30 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

Saulino, Pauline

The entire Saulino family wishes to extend our most sincere and deepest gratitude to several
people who were vital to maintaining her dignity and providing her joy in her final years.
The Memory Care unit at the Courtyard of Berne Village was her home for almost five years.
During her stay, she endeared herself to several residents and staff. They became her North
Carolina family. In her final days several staff ensured that she had a peaceful and comfortable
passing. People like Tammy, Diana, Theresa, Amanda, Irene, Mary, Robin and many more
treated her as if she were their own mother. Our family is blessed that she was so loved.
Craven County Homecare and Hospice did a spectacular job of helping us navigate the waters
into her eternal life. Kristin and Maxine were kind and thorough in her care. Their agency
responded with swift efficiency. Dr. Ken Wilkins worked hand and glove with hospice to ensure
that our Ms. Polly was pain free. The team approach of Hospice and Dr. Wilkins provided the
nuts and bolts that allowed her loved ones to say good-bye knowing she was in safe hands.
She will be laid to rest on September 29, 2008, in Michigan, next to her husband Marty. Her
children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren will say their final adieus know-ing she had a huge
extended family in New Bern who grew to care for her and love her as part of their family.
In the death of a loved one we touch upon our own mortality. For a few brief moments we experience
the sacredness of life. To the extent we love we will grieve. In that griev-ing, we capture moments of
the magical mystery. Holding a new baby becomes more precious. Holding a door for an elderly
person takes on new depth. Winter is approach-ing and amidst its bleakness the soil is getting
ready for the blossoms of spring.

Manning Sr., Rossie

Rossie M. Manning Sr., 90, passed away Saturday, September 27, 2008. Mr. Manning was born
in Pitt County on April 17, 1918.
He worked as a farmer in Pitt County in his early years and later learned to be a brick mason, a
trade that led him to Norfolk, Va., and eventually led him to become involved in home construction.
He soon found himself back in North Carolina where he continued to work in construction with firms
in Tarboro, Washington, and Sea Level, N.C.
In 1963 he was led to New Bern to construct a home for a local Stanley Tool Employee, Mr. Frank
Efird. Mr. Manning and Mr. Efird soon became partners in new home construction and built many
homes together. Around 1970 they split and Mr. Manning decided to build on his own with a short
stint in partnership with Mr. Hopie Beamon as Colonial Builders of New Bern. Soon thereafter, Mr.
Manning started M&M Builders of New Bern where he enjoyed some of his greatest achievements.
He became a land developer and created many subdivisions in Craven and Jones counties, some
of which included Rawley Hills, Springdale and Manning Park. He went on to construct over 300 new
homes and commercial buildings in and around the New Bern area. He strived for perfection in his
home building and it showed as he built a reputation for quality homes which led to most Real Estate
agents marketing his homes, new and used, as a Rossie Manning Built Home.
Mr. Manning enjoyed fishing, dancing, telling jokes and an occasional card game with his friends.
After his retirement, he enjoyed having coffee with his friends at Bojangles' and Roy' Restaurant. He
enjoyed being around people and living his life to the fullest. His greatest friend however was Jesus
and he was introduced to Him in 2007 by preacher Paul Jackson and for that his family and friends
are greatly thankful and know that he is with the Lord and at peace.
Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Pollock-Best Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Paul Jackson
officiating.
He is survived by three daughters, Barbara Manning Tucker and husband, Rev. Grady Tucker of New
Bern, Gay Nell Manning of Greenville, and Virginia Manning Flake and husband, Bobby R. Flake of
