Carraway’s Distc. 14 Nov 1828 It is ordered that the Treasurer of Public buildings shall prevent any person from ringing the Court house bells as the Clock is likely to be injured by the too frequent ringing of the bell. Mon 9th Aug Term 1830 Silvester Brown and Joseph Nelson, Esquires, produce Commissions from the Govenor of the State Appointing them Justices of the Peace of Craven county and qualifying by taking and subscribing in open Court the oaths required by law. May Term 1830 The following Justices being a Majority of the Justices of the county appear in Court towit: John Brinson, Will. S. Blackledge, Silvester Brown, Charles Carraway, Joseph Nelson, Joseph Physioc, among others. Aug 9 1830 Inventory of estate of Benj. C. Brinson dec’d is filed & ordered to be registered. The President & Directors of the State Bank of N. Carolina vs. Silvester Brown, jury finds all issues for plaintiff. Tues. Aug 10 1830 Thomas Sparrow, Geo. A. Hall, & Thomas G. Ellis are appointed to audit the accounts of Smith Delamar Executor of James Nelson. Friday 13th Aug 1830 Henrietta Curruthers & Others vs. Cason Brinson adm. Of Benj. C. Brinson. A deed from Joseph Brinson to Samuel Brinson was proved by the oath of Zaccheus Slade. Aug Term 1830 Partition of the lands of Col. Henry Tillman by Lucas Benners, John Burney & Wm S Sparrow was offered for probate & the execution by Lucas& John Burney was proved by the oath of John Coart & at the same time Joseph Nelson made oath in open court tht he was intimately & well aquainted with the handwriting of Wm S Sparrow dec’d having frequently seen him write that he verily believed the signature Wm S Sparrow at the foot of said instrument of writing was the proper signature of said deceased. Mon 8th Nov. 1830 State vs. Benj. Brinson & heirs Simon Brinson acknowledges himself indebted to the State in $100 to be levied of his goods & chattels, lands and tenements to be void nevertheless if he makes his personal appearance at the next term of this court to answer the above charge. Cason Brinson is recognized in the sum of $50 for the appearance of Simon Brinson. Tues 9th Nov. 1830 John N. Thomas, Josephus Nelson, Joseph Delamar and Thomas Bowden are appointed Patrols in Capt. Jury finds for the plaintiff. 1831 Feb Term State vs. Benj. Brinson, Simon Brinson, Betsey Brinson. Found guilty and fined $5 each – Betsey Brinson $6. Wed Feb 16th 1831 Jurors drawn for April Term 1831 of the Superior Court of Craven County: John W Nelson, Samuel Hyman, Smith Delamar, Gideon Sparrow, John Coart, among others. May Term 1831 Tues. 10th John S Nelson vs. Will H Borden & Francis J. w. Nelson – find for the plaintiff. The following Jurors are drawn for the Aug Term 1831 of this Court viz: Jacob Morris, Francis Mason, & Josephus Nelson, Phillip Carrruthers, among others. May Term 1831 A deed from Ann Carter to Joseph Nelson was proved by the oath of John S Ellis. A deed from Mary Lister & Elisabeth Lister to Joseph Nelson was proved by the oath of Jn. S. Ellis. SPECIAL SESSIONS JUNE 30TH 1831 At a special session held at the clerk’s office at the Court House in Newbern on the 30th day of June 1831 Before the Worshipful John P Daves Benjamin Mason Hardy Whitford Esquires Ordered that Josephus nelson be appointed special administrator of Joseph Nelson deceased on entering into bond in $5000 with Mary Nelson & Henrietta Sparrow his sureties, at same time said administrator entered into said bond and qualified. SPECIAL SESSION JUNE 30TH 1831 cont’d The Admn. Of Joseph Nelson has permission to sell the personal property a list of which is this day filed & subscribed by the Court. Aug term 1831 Administration on the estate of Joseph Nelson deceased is granted to Josephus Nelson on his entering into bond in $36.000 with Mary Nelson, Sally Nelson & Henrietta Sparrow his sureties. Mon. 8th Aug Term 1831 James G Stanly, Jacob Gooding & Thomas Sparrow are appointed to audit the accounts of Joseph Nelson Exec. Of Will. S. sparrow & guardian of his children. The admn. Of Joseph Nelson as permission to the sell the residue of the personal estate of his intestate except the negroes. John P. Davis, John M. Roberts, Wm. Hollister and Frederick Jones are appointed Commisioners to allot to Mary Widow of Joseph Nelson one year’s provision for herself & family. Tues 9th A. D. 1831 Josephus Nelson enters into the bond required by the order of yesterday as admn. Of Joseph Nelson with Mary Nelson, Sally Nelson, & Henrietta Sparrow his sureties & qualifies. Letters of Admn. Ordered. A deed from Joseph Nelson to Thomas Jones was proved by the oath of Josephus Nelson. Added from Joseph Nelson to Smith Delamar was proved by the oath of Josephus Nelson. A deed from Joseph Nelson to Henrietta Sparrow was proved by the oath of Benjn. Mason. A deed from Joseph Nelson to Michael Hukins was proved by the oath of Benjamin Mason. Nov. Term 1831 Mon. 14th John S Nelson appointed as commissioner along with Benjn. Mason to take the private examination of Amelia Neale as to her full consent in executing a deed with Abner Neale to Thos. Fulshire. Thurs 17th. Inventory and account of sales of estate of Joseph Nelson deceased are filed. Wm. B. Perkins is appointed guardian to Matilda Sparrow, Wm. J. Sparrow, Betsy Sparrow and Ann Maria Sparrow on entering into bond in L5,000 with Josephus Nelson and Henrietta Sparrow her sureties. Josephus Nelson Admn. Of Joseph Nelson has leave to sell ten of the slaves of his said intestate at six months credit to enable him to pay debts. Wed. 16th May Term 1832 The following persons are appointed Inspectors of the approaching election of members of the General Assembly. That is to say: Holland Epps, Thos. Hyman, Benj. Mason, Abner Neale, Thos. Carraway, Josephus Nelson among others. Saturday 19th A deed from Southy Rew to to John S Nelson was proved by the oath of Abner Neale one of the subscribing witnesses thereto. A deed from Josephus Nelson Admn. To John N. Thomas was proved by the oath of Geor. S. Attmore Ordered that a Commission issue to Francis Mason, John S. Nelson, & Benjamin Mason to take the private examination of Amelia Neale wife of Abner Neale as to her full consent in executing a deed from said Abner Neale & Amelia to Thomas Fulshire which was proved at November Term 1831 of this court. August Term 1832 Betsey Sparrow & others vs. Admn. Of Jos. Nelson. Ordered & decreed that petitioners receiveth of defendant $133.21. The balllance reported by clerk to be due petitioners & costs it is ordered that the clerk be allowed $30 said sum to be divided between Pett. & defendant. Wed 15th Account of sales of property of Joseph Nelson deceased is filed. Benjamin Mason a Clergyman residing in Craven County. November Term A. D. 1832 Mon 12th Michael Hukins is appointed guardian to Frances Nelson in the place of John N. Thomas resigned , on entering into bond in £1000 with John Shine & Stephen Nelson sureties. John Brinson, William B Perkins & Samuel Brinson are appointed to audit the accounts of Cason Brinson Admn. Of Benjamin C. Brinson. Inventory of estate of Benj. C. Brinson deceased is filed. Fri. 16th Wm B. Perkins Esq. guardian to the children of Wm S. Sparrow is alalowed until next term to return his settlement & accounts. Benj. F. Nelson among others appointed patrols in the south River District. Feb TERM A. D. 1833 Mon 11th Settlement of accounts of Cason Brinson admn of Benj. C. Brinson is filed. Admn. Of estate of Catharine Stanly granted to Alexander H Stanly on his entering into $2600 bond with Edward Stanly is surety & qualified. Tues 12th Settlement of accounts of Wm B Perkins guardian to children of William S. Sparrow returned & received & approved by court. Ordered that Benj. Mason, Abner Neale & Thomas H Nelson audit the accounts of Richard Parsons & Elizabeth his wife Executors of John Nelson to divide the negro slaves among his legatees. Note: (John Nelson, brother of Col. Joseph Nelson, his wife Elizabeth remarried to Richard Parsons after his death). Tues. 12th James C. Cole vs. John W. Nelson & Josephus Nelson, jury charged 7 fine issues for plaintiff. Prin. $111.35. Int. $7.68 & costs. Judgement accordingly.
