This is a listing of the census records for Craven County. We have transcribed the names EXACTLY as they appear on the census records. The census transcription is complete and as accurate as the original census takers wrote it down. Any errors or omissions are not on our part. As you can see we need volunteers to help transcribe some of the census records. Won't you please volunteer to help with one? There has been some question as to the 1719-1789 early census indexes that I have on this site. These indexes are available from the LDS churches on microfilm as well as the NC Archives. Ancestry.com also has them on their site. The early census records are compiled from tax lists, militia rolls & other records — for years before 1790. A state census was also taken in the years 1784 to 1787, which produced information similar to (but not exactly the same as) the federal 1790 census. Do a Google Search of Early North Carolina Census or Early North Carolina Tax Lists and you will find many results to answer any questions about the legitimacy of these records.
