Teresa "Waterlily" Morris (Belder) is the author of a
children's book titled Families of the Neuse (A Story of Two Friends).
This little book has been endorsed by retired senior writer of National
Geographic Magazine, Harvey Arden and NC Education Chairman, Phil Kirk.
Teresa is originally from Craven County and a graduate of Farm Life High in 1971.
"Long ago our ancestors walked this land and fished these living waters. This
was their homeland and today it is ours. Let us teach the children by our daily
examples a reverence for Life. Let us teach the children well."
"My little book celebrates the living history of the Tuscarora (Skarohreh) being
the 1st people calling the Banks of the Neuse home."
"There are people living in coastal Carolina that most likely share these
bloodlines but because of Tuscarora War that took place 1711-13 many were
strongly encouraged not to lay claim to that part of their heritage."
"Bottom line....Not all Tuscarora women and children migrated towards the north
after the loss of the war. I'm one 48 year old wife, mother, teacher, author,
taxpayer, voter, citizen, voice drawing back the buckskin curtain and daring to
teach those parts that have been placed on spiritual and educational layaway for
many generations."
"Families of The Neuse (A Story of Two Friends) will help others along the way
consider the priceless contributions of their ancestors and how we can celebrate
all that we are living in Craven County in the years ahead. It will cause us to
pause and consider our individual role in ongoing stewardship and how we have a
responsibility to insure Seven Generations yet to come will not inherit a
wasteland rather than the promised land."
"O-neh-weh-yuh-ka (North Carolina) has a very rich history prior to colonial
history. When you really think about it....colonial history is a snapshot when
you consider the fact Indians were here for over 10,000 years."
Folks interested in the book should check with their local bookstores to see if they carry it in their stores and if not they are welcomed to contact Ms. Morris via the following e-mail address teresa@teresamorris.com and/or teresa@tuscaroras.com and someone from her staff will be contact them shortly.
